Character Background (Pre-Gamma Site):

Dexter Morgan is a white male in his thirties, with brown hair, brown eyes. He is (was, I suppose) a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro PD. He was adopted when he was around three or four by Harry Morgan. His younger sister, Debra (or Deborah, depending on who you ask), also works with the Metro PD. Dexter is in a steady relationship with his girlfriend, Rita. He's surprisingly good with her two kids, Astor and Cody.

Oh, and he's a serial killer. But not an evil one. Really.

You see, at age three, he watched his mother die in a cargo container. More specifically, he saw her decapitated with a chainsaw, and was trapped in the container, sitting in a pool of his mother's blood, alone save for the corpse and the company of his older brother (age four). Days later, they were found by Harry Morgan (who was, at the time, a police officer), who carried Dexter off and ended up adopting him.

Long story short: because of all that, Dexter likes killing things. Preferably people. Fortunately, Harry noticed before he went any further than small animals, and managed to get Dexter "squared away" under a rigid code of ethics - Dexter was only to kill other killers, the ones who escape the grasp of the justice system. Under Harry's instruction, Dexter learned how to kill effectively and cover his tracks. (The secret? Duct tape and plastic wrap. Lots of it.) Harry also taught Dexter to constantly maintain a cover of normalcy. In the end, Harry commits suicide after witnessing, firsthand, the monster he had created.

By all accounts, Dexter is a fairly average person. A bit on the geeky side, what with all the time he spends in the lab, a bit of a neat freak, but a nice guy all around. Rarely ever confrontational, Dexter prefers to remain in the shadows, but he manages to make himself be heard just enough so that no one will suspect something's going on. He plays the part of Good Big Brother for Deb, Nice Boyfriend for Rita, Cool Dad for Astor and Cody, and Just An Average Guy for everyone else. Completely, utterly harmless.

But what about Dexter's real personality? Well, in one corner, we have Dexter - his unwavering loyalty towards Harry, the relentless drive to stay ahead of the law, and some sort of vague affection towards Deb, Rita, Astor and Cody. Not much else, really, seeing as he has to put on his Normal routine pretty much 24/7. In the other corner, we have the Dark Passenger, treated as completely separate from Dexter - his primal need to kill. It is referred to as a "passenger" because it's constantly sitting right alongside Dexter, and once in a while Dexter lets it take the wheel.

Gamma Site Biography:

Dexter's been helping out as a technician at the Bio lab. There are a lot of people who have a lot more training than does, but the meticulous precision he's been honing for his entire life is certainly showing its usefulness. (He briefly considered med school, when he was in college. Though he was certainly capable of it, Dexter decided to choose the more inconspicuous career of the lab rat.)

Ever since contact with Earth has been cut off, his Dark Passenger has been eerily silent. Dexter isn't particularly concerned - he chalks it up to self-preservation. After all, it would be a lot harder for a death to go unnoticed at the Gamma Site than in Miami. But still, Dexter's a bit unnerved by the silence in his head. Without the Dark Passenger's instincts, Dexter's, well, just another geek.

He'll never, ever admit it to anyone else, but he's not really miffed about the whole Earth-is-gone thing. Sure, he sort of misses having Astor and Cody around, and he would kill (heh) for a decent donut, but Dexter has always been of the opinion that Miami was too stuffy and overcrowded. The people here don't really pay him much attention, what with all the things they need to do to keep this place up and running - pretty much just like at home, then.
