Jack... promised. Sort of. In such a way, he supposed, that made it seem more likely than not that he was going to appear at the party. What did one get a botanist for her birthday? Dr. Klein had said that it was a belated birthday party of sorts, and as a result, the general had to fish around for something that would vaguely appear as if he'd put some serious time and effort and thought into the 'perfect' gift.

He failed.

Not for lack of-- oh, hell. Yes. He didn't try that hard. Then again, it was one of those 'things' that he never really tried all that hard on. Apology presents to his now ex-wife? Sure. 'Thoughtful' presents? Nope.

So, in hand, a six-pack of beer (for the party) and a couple more guests as a consolation prize?

Swinging around the 'back yard' area, Jack stopped long enough near the drinks to put the six-pack down and stepped away, pulling a bottle for his own. Once done, he did have to greet Dr. Klein.. all the little-- where was she? He turned around slowly as he searched, his brows rising.. and--

Ah.

Jack made his way over, a tight-lipped smile creasing his face. "Ah.. Doctor. Wanted to say 'thank you' for the invite and.. uh.. looks like a good showing."

"Have you noticed that Jack is very popular these days?" Daniel asked Sam as he fell into step beside her. "I'm just trying to figure out how his popularity leads to us being here." Daniel indicated what he meant by 'here' by sweeping his arm around the yard of Dr. Klein's 'home.'

Truthfully, Daniel didn't mind being here all that much, and he greeted several of the botanists, and few other scientists, by title if not by first name. He did however, hang back and pretend to be utterly engrossed when one stuttering botanist, Edgar Deacon, began explaining how he had a plant he wanted to name after Dr. Weir and was wondering if Daniel could arrange a meeting.

Daniel decided to point Edgar to Jack later, making sure to mention that Jack would love to hear about the intracacies first hand.

The conversation, in the astrophysics lab, had gone something like this:

"Carter. BBQ. Dr. Klein's. Tonight. Be there."

Sam had turned to find Jack framed in the doorway, pointing at her in that way of his. "Uh... sir?" A beat. She'd suppressed a grimace. "Another one?"

"It's her birthday." Jack had shifted uncomfortably, but maintained a steady gaze. "Don't make me make it an order, Colonel."

Sam's brows had creased, her expression had been a mix of amusement, a bit of confusion -- ~And she invited Jack?~ -- and acquiescence. "Ah. Of course." She'd flashed something of a grin then. "Yes, sir."

He'd nodded shortly, giving her that look, and then beat a steady retreat. And she'd been left trying to figure out just what the hell she was supposed to get the botanist for her birthday.

Thus, she had to laugh as Daniel made his observation. "Yeah," she said, a wry smile on her face. "I have noticed." She shrugged then, "And it beats the hell out of me." Flashing the archaelogist a grin, she chuckled softly. "Then again, look around, Daniel." Her hand swept their surroundings as well. "He's surrounded by PhD's." A beat. "Again."

She almost felt sorry for the man.

As Edgar waylaid them, however, she gave Daniel a cheerful smile and a companionable squeeze on the shoulder, holding up the package she'd managed to scavenge from the market. "I'll just go give this to Dr. Klein. I'll be back in a bit."

Like sometime after Edgar had moved on. (She did, in fact, feel sorry for Elizabeth.)

It may seem odd for the birthday girl to be standing away from her guests, but Summer does see these people every day, so maybe that's in. She was in a position to see people arriving so she noticed the General and company joining the party. She took note of the waylaid archeaologist and just shook her head, since she pretty well knew what it was about. She also knew she'd probably have to spend much of the night rescuing the famed SG-1.

As the General approached she straightened up from her lean against the wall and gave him a smile in return, "General, thank you for coming... and bringing guests. There's lots of food, so help yourself. I think Pip even takes requests on how you like your burger." As she spoke she fidgeted a little, shifting her weight nervously from one foot to the other.

Summer then noticed the approach of the Colonel and looked back to Jack... wonderful, "I hope you enjoy the party. There's cake too." See, Summer remembers some things. Actually there is both a chocolate cake and a vanilla cake, since she wasn't sure just which would be liked more.

Summer turned now to face the approaching Colonel, her alone time with the General drawing to a close, "Evening Colonel." She took note of the gift and a brow arched up, "You didn't have to bring anything. Thank you." She hadn't expected anything since this party was thrown together in less then 10 hours. She surely didn't expect anything from the Colonel. Hell, now she maybe had to like the woman.

"And Ice Cream." Molly held a metal pail, as did the smiling man next to her. Keighvan. "I made ice cream. Purpleberry and plain vanilla." Molly handed her pail to her cousin to be taken to the table with the cake.

"Happy birthday, Summer." Molly offered a hug, complete with icy fingers.

She then placed a package of wrapped soap in front of the head botanist. Lavender and vanilla soap. The best currently made. And with a pretty high trade value as a luxury item.

Jack remained there for a moment, 'stuck', as it were... in place. "Yeah-- Oh, hey... cake. Can't be a party without that, right?" His tones sounded upbeat, looking for something to touch on in what was turning out to be a little uncomfortable. And he had no idea why.

Sam's approach brought his attention around, his expression one of.. rescue? "Carter. Great. See? Uh... happy birthday."

Jack took a step back, gestured in 'salute' with his beer, and nodded. "Right. I'll check the grill then." Turning around, the general took a step forward, "And ice cream." How nice.

He started to head towards Daniel, but found the archaeologist in conversation with Dr. Deacon.. not that the general knew the man's name. Still, the way Daniel was standing, his rapt attention-- it couldn't be good. His friend was trying to remain polite. Good. It was good for him, really. And, it gave him the chance to dodge.

Waiting for Sam to return from handing off 'the' gift, Jack wandered closer to the grill to look at the offerings there. Potato salad. Meat. Not bad at all.

Of course, he wasn't going to be alone long, and it wasn't with 'good' company.. well, it was all in how one could define the word 'good'. Dr. Laurence Heaney, the scientist in charge of studying flora with an eye towards both history and potential futures, moved alongside the general, offering a, "General.. sir... I was wondering..."

He didn't get much farther, however, before Jack put a hand up to forestall anymore that might actually come, "Ah-ah... work. This is a party." Jack knew he wasn't going to get away with it, certainly as the botanist was gearing up for a full explanation.

"Yes, but the phenology--"

"Is that even a word?"

"A word?" Dr. Heaney looked momentarily confused.

"Yes. A word. 'Phen--whatever'." Jack's own expression carried that ... 'I'm really not getting the importance' expression.

"Um... yes, you see..."

Jack held up his hand again, the one with the beer in it, threatening a little bit of sloshing of the contents. "Okay. See... Don't want to know about it tonight. If the colony can go another night blissfully unaware, I'm good with it."

Carter!

"Evening, Colonel."

A light, friendly smile spread over Sam's features as Dr. Klein greeted her. "Good evening, doctor." She proffered her small package. "You're welcome. Happy birthday." If she was aware of any reason for discomfort, aside from Jack's unease among PhD's, she certainly didn't show it. If anything, she was quite her usual, relaxed and cheerful self.

The package she offered was wrapped in a plain bit of paper -- since, really, there wasn't much to be had in terms of festive wrap. Within was a handwoven pashmina, hand-dyed with a natural dye, all of which had been prepared and crafted from materials obtained on Gamma within the colony. The woman Sam had bartered it from had claimed some experience with historical textile production, thanks to some esoteric re-creationist hobby she'd indulged in prior to stepping through the 'gate. Whatever the case, the woman actually knew weaving and dying and had, over the course of the winter and early spring, managed to produce a mid-weight fabric suitable for a variety of applications, in this case a decorative shawl. Sam had been duly impressed. She'd seen hundreds of fine examples on various worlds she'd visited through the stargate, but creating such things were beyond her personally. Still, thanks to that exposure, she'd been satisfied it was good quality and she'd gotten a fair trade for it, so it worked.

"I hope you like it."

She flashed a knowing grin as Jack retreated to his favourite public gathering foxhole, the grill. Some things were predictable. But, then Molly and Keighvan showed up with their ice cream and it caused a small stir. Funny what things had become true luxuries in the last year.

"Wow," Sam grinned. "I think you two are about to become the most popular people here." For at least as long as the confection lasted, anyway. People were fickle that way.

Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Dr. Heaney home in on Jack, just as Deacon had homed in on Daniel. A wry smile touched her lips. Daniel could survive on his own. Jack? Well, he could, too... but it was always easier when he had a beer in his hand, which he had... All of which meant Sam didn't have to rudely excuse herself from Summer and go chasing after her friend. She could be courteous and maybe build a bridge or two, outside of whatever professional relationship the two had developed over her last several months coordinating the various labs.

"We do birthdays, weddings and bar-mitzvahs.” Kieghvan smiled. “Ice cream was Molly’s idea. I’d have brought alcohol. SHE said I make it a bit too potent and a drunken revelry wasn’t the point. And will someone please explain to me what ‘Spin the bottle’ means?”

He leaned in to press a kiss to Summer’s cheek and placed a rough surfaced rock in front of her. He laughed at her expression.

“’Tis a geode. Cracking it open is the surprise.”

But then what did one expect from a geologist? Rocks and gems.

Daniel managed to separate himself from Deacon, and headed over to greet the hostess and birthday girl. He arrived just in time to hear about the ice cream, and Keighvan's gift. Somehow the man managed to make what would have come off as "weird and geeky," on anyone else somehow acceptable.

"I'm not sure I can beat an original, alien geode," Daniel said, handing over the small wrapped package. It was a notebook, spiral bound and made here on the planet. As a scientist, Daniel knew the value of such things. "I hope you can put this one to good use."

He looked around and saw that Jack was trying to fend off another botanist, and almost ... almost felt bad about knowing that Dr. Deacon would be looking for the general later. "Great turnout," Daniel noted.

His brain then caught up and he re-heard Keighvan's question. Surely, the man was joking. "It's a game. Involving a bottle. And kissing ... and please tell me that you're messing with us?"

"Sorry. Shelterd childhood traveling quite a bit and taught by my parents. My collage years were more focused on study... and this lass named Oriana. Her legs..." He shook his head.

"Missed spin the bottle, but mastered Twister." He arched a brow. "And a fair share of drinking games."

Summer smiled at Molly, and her approach, "Good evening Molly and Kieghvan." Despite the fact that Summer had no problem using other people's first names she still never seemed to pass along her own. Even to botany, the people she was probably closest to, she was Dr. Klein.

Summer took Molly's present and brightened, "Thank you Molly, though it really wasn't necessary. I do appreciate it."

As Jack took his leave Summer looked to him again, "Thank you General. Enjoy the party." She looked almost pained after the man turned and headed for the grill. Once he was gone she turned back to Sam, taking her present, "Thank you Colonel."

Summer opened the present and managed not to look shocked at the gift, "It's loveley." Damn, she really had to like the woman. Sometimes life really sucked.

Thankfully Summer was saved from saying something potentially stupid by Kieghvan's kiss on the cheek and his gift. She blushed slightly and took the gift, giving the yummy looking man a smile, "Thank you very much. I'll open it later."

Summer was really racking up the gifts, something she definitely hadn't expected. All the rest of botany brought her was a plant. Daniel's approach brought another smile from the botanist and the gift brought a sound that was akin to a gasp, "Thank you Dr. Jackson. You have no idea how much I need this... or well you probably do." Yes, Summer is a geek.... thanks for asking.

Summer does look around and turn back to Daniel, "I think they all came for the food." Speaking of that she turns to look at the grill and the man manning it, "And if Pip says anything obnoxious when you get food, just smack him. I do." He is her brother after all.

Summer managed to keep all her gifts balanced in her arms even as she turned to blink at Kieghvan. Nope not touching the topic of Twister, "Well no party games. I wasn't sure the geeks could handle it."

Considering the homemade brew that Keighvan delivered to the Brookfields cookout, Daniel wasn't all that surprised that the man had mastered a few drinking games. (Probably won a lot of them too.)

"Oh come on, you haven't seen a party until you've seen a room full of lab geeks ... " Daniel couldn't even finish the sentence with a straight face. "Yeah, well, anyway. No games. Somehow I don't think this is a rowdy crowd. Now, Jack," Daniel pitched his voice higher to be heard by the general, "however, is dangerous with the grill, so I'd keep an eye on him."

Oh, the horror. Summer had to actually consider liking Carter, now? God forbid! ;)

Pleased that Summer seemed to like the scarf, Carter smiled broadly. "Well, you're welcome," she said lightly. She glanced to Keighvan and Molly, and the sundry others that had gravitated to the botanist to add their well-wished. Thumbing a quick gesture over her shoulder, towards the grill, she canted her head. "Okay... I'm gonna go see about some food." A hand flipped to encompass everyone else around in light gesture. "Let everyone else have a chance to say hello. Again, happy birthday, doctor."

That said, Sam backed away from the group a step or two and then turned and began to make an easy wander towards the food tables and the grill. She circumnavigated a tangle of other scientists talking animatedly about some lab results they'd gotten earlier, and fended off one that wanted to talk about the photo-sonic responses of certain water plants he'd discovered in a pond some distance away from the settlement with the promise that she'd love to sit and hear all about it later. After she'd gotten some food.

Thus, she paused briefly to pick up a bit of fruit juice and some salad before she finally made it to Pip at the grill and his selection of meat.

Pippin had to have had a stint in a fast food joint. The long-haired brunette that always seemed to have a smile and a laugh (usually at someone else's expense) was wielding the spatula with an air of someone who was more than intimately aware of exactly how long a burger needed to be cooked.

Probably a summer job.

"Hi, hi," he offered. "I've got.. 'still mooing', 'safe to eat according to FDA', and 'hockey puck'. Then.. I have real cheese, processed American cheese food which, with the twinkies, managed to survive the year, or plain. Then, there are the other bits that I sto-- requistioned and signed out of botany-- tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce--"

Pippin paused, spatula in the air, as he twisted around to call out to Summer, "Hey, sis. The cucumbers from the lab. Those were cucumbers, right?" They certainly looked it, and from the expression on his face, they probably were, and he was just yanking her chain.

He returned his attention to the Colonel, and nodded, gesturing with the spatula. "Your poison?"

"But general, the implications--"

Jack held up a hand against the explanations that he knew were coming. His words sank to a sotto voice, his expression shifting towards that deadpanned 'is he serious' look. "I don't care. Right now, all I really care about is whether or not I'm gonna get one of those burgers before they're gone. If it's important, you need to go through a translator and put it all into English-- Ah, ah!! -- into English so they can pass it on--"

"If I could actually get there." Jack raised his voice in the small area, just to make his point. He raised his hand in a loose pointing gesture, index finger tilted upwards, "Now.. if you'll excuse me." Wasn't an 'if' in the entire statement.

Breaking off, Jack actually got to make his way over towards the grill, and caught the end of the descriptions of food. He stopped just behind the Colonel, and to the side, looking over her shoulder at the offerings. "Who puts green stuff on their burgers?"

Summer nodded to Carter, "Thank you again Colonel. I love it." She actually did like it a lot.

Summer was really glad she managed not to squee though at her present from Daniel. She was sure she'd never live it down if she had. The others might have let her but Pip wouldn't. He'd probably go on about how only she could squee over a notebook and not over the wonderful six pack the General brought.

Summer looks back to Daniel, "Well Pip had suggested a few party games, but then I threatened to gag him and he stopped." Well actually he hadn't. That just tended to goad him more, but she couldn't very well tell Daniel that she threatened Pip's Marijuana supply.

Summer couldn't help but hear Pip's comment and frankly if the geode hadn't been a present she would have seriously contemplated throwing it at her brother's head. She let out a long suffering sigh before turning to fix her brother with a look that she knew wouldn't scare him, "Pip... if I had something to throw at you I'd clock you. Behave."

Summer then turned back to her guests, "Just ignore him. I've tried to housebreak him for years but it never takes." Sometimes she thinks he's trying to give her an ulcer or something.
