[character]: Lavi; Bookman Jr.
[character history / background]: [Because I’ll be making references to them henceforth, here are links to
the Official D.Gray-Man Fanbook and a compilation post of all the novel stories,
including Lavi’s.]
Nothing is known of Lavi’s history from before he was six years old, which was when he cast away his real name and everything else about his life to join one of the current Bookmen and train under him. (A Bookman is someone who watches, observes, and records happenings that take place all across the globe, specifically ones that are shrouded in mystery and not normally found written in textbooks. They themselves are not to get attached to anyone, for they are required to record history in an unbiased manner.) Information pertaining to his parents is not known.
At the age of seven, while recording a battle, he was shot by a stray bullet and nearly lost his life. While growing up it was apparent that he developed a sense of resentment and distrust toward mankind, undoubtedly because of all the wars he witnessed, and as necessary of Bookmen, he learned basic martial arts and simple medical procedures.
When he was sixteen, Lavi joined the Black Order as an Exorcist alongside Bookman; this was actually where he first took on the name "Lavi," which was his 49th alias. Before meeting the head of the Science Department, Komui Lee, Bookman reminded Lavi of what he was not supposed to do, receiving an arrogant smirk from the boy and a comment about how he would just smile and get close to them like always, hinting at the fact that any smile he gave was fake and his cheery personality was a sham.
One of his first mistakes was calling a fellow Exorcist, Yu Kanda, "Yu-kun," and he came close to losing his life for that. However, Lenalee Lee- Komui’s little sister-came to his aid.
Since joining the Order he has taken on various missions such as battling akuma and helping to retrieve Innocence (a power the Black Order is sure comes straight from God that can be modified into weapons for exorcists to fight with). His last assignment before being brought into the series had him teaming up with a Finder (Finders are members of the Order who are unable to accommodate with Innocence but aid Exorcists mainly by going into the field and searching for new Innocence fragments) named Doug. Doug grew close to a girl involved in their investigation, and after she was killed, he called back her soul and was turned into an akuma in the process. When the monster invaded the Order, Lavi sorrowfully destroyed it while Bookman watched. Directly following this incident, Komui sent Lavi off to meet Allen for the first time.
[Lavi’s appearances in the series from then on are noted here:
Lavi’s D.Gray-Man Wiki page. However, that page doesn’t mention certain important events.]
Bookman and Lavi arrived at the new headquarters a day earlier than scheduled, claiming to be there on their own business. When Allen was led away by the Crow, Bookman left Lavi in charge of witnessing the exchange between the boy and General Cross in person, and because of that he learned about the “Fourteenth” that resided within Allen. Cross also mentioned “another side” of the war, something that interested Lavi, but when he questioned his elder about it, Bookman told him to forget about it until he said otherwise.
However, Lavi did bring it up again not long after the General’s disappearance, and relentlessly pressed the issue and questioned his teacher about what the man realized that day. The other replied that, if he managed to escape with his life, he doubted Cross Marian would be returning to the Order. Lavi inquired exactly who Cross escaped from, and just as he thought he had caught on, Bookman stated that due to the two of them being spectators to what happened that day, they should move with caution since there was a high probability of them being in danger as well.
[character abilities]: Non-Innocence related abilities include an unusually good memory in every way (he can memorize an item down to every last scratch and dent, as shown when he finds the correct key out of an unbelievable amount to escape from Jasdevi and Devitt on the Ark) and a talent to hide or fake emotions. It was stated in the Official DGM Fanbook that Lavi has learned martial arts and medicinal skills as necessary of Bookmen; however, aside from fighting for his life using a knife in Road’s dream world, one physical fight with Allen, and battling alongside Kanda while brandishing a flagpole, Lavi has not been shown fighting without his Innocence nor giving someone medical aid. In the D.Gray-Man novel story that centered on Lavi, it was revealed that he has two eyes, and the eye he hides behind the eyepatch holds an ability he seems to fear. What that ability is, however, is a mystery.
[The following was taken mostly from
Lavi’s D.Gray-Man Wiki page.]
Tessei - Lavi’s Innocence which is in the form of a hammer. His liking of giving things nicknames comes into play here as well, as he calls his weapon “Big Hammer, Little Hammer” instead of its actual title. It can ‘extend’ (the handle can stretch as far as he wills it to; he often uses it to travel long distances) or ‘grow’ (the head of the hammer can increase to any size) at his command. There are times where he takes advantage of this ability and uses his weapon to travel.
Fire Seal: Configuration of Ash - A pillar of flames in the form of a snake targets the enemy.
Heaven Seal: Thundering Lightning Whirling in the Skies - A lightning storm is created.
Wood Seal: Roots Entwining Heaven and Earth - Able to control nature in a way like clearing away clouds.
Combo Seal: Strong Thunder of the Heavens - This combination is used to attack with a snake of not only fire, but iron also; a shield of fire can be produced, too.
Not all of Lavi’s Innocence’s abilities have been revealed. Some he has yet to learn.
[character personality]: Before coming to the Order he was cold and indifferent toward everyone. His personality is normally positive and cheery, but during his major fight with Road, he contemplates that in time, he didn’t know if the smiles he had come to always show were acts or not, so his happy moods may or may not have been genuine. At times he can be deadly serious, typically in battle or when Bookman scolds and reminds him of his duties as a Bookman’s apprentice, but he also has a habit of impulsively rushing into things when he’s mad, such as he does against Tyki in Edo; at one point he even smashes a window out of anger. Earlier in the story he appeared to be rather reckless with his weapon, demolishing entire buildings and whatnot; though he seems to have improved with time.
He has a curious streak; he asks a lot of questions, once even going so far as to follow the Science Department while they tried to hide some “dangerous stuff” that the Supervisor, Komui Lee, had made. One of the scientists commented that Lavi can be “like a dog with a bone sometimes,” indicating that he can be stubborn and relentless when he’s interested.
His memory may be excellent, but he’s only human; he still forgets things, sometimes at the worst times, such as when he forgot about a skill he possesses that would have made things exceptionally easier while fighting on Anita’s ship. Lavi has also stated before that he keeps a mental record of everything.
Personal space doesn’t matter to this boy. He’ll happily pop up wherever he pleases, sometimes seemingly out of nowhere. At different points in the manga he has appeared without warning from things like a stack of papers and a barrel.
He is supposedly attracted to girls from 18 to 40 years old, and flirts with anyone he considers his type, saying "STRIKE~!" when he first sees them. Even though he is eighteen, he possesses childlike qualities; he teases people a lot and loves coming up with nicknames. (For example, he usually refers to Bookman as "Panda” and Krory as "Krorykins.”) These given titles can either relate to the victim’s appearance (like “Panda” and him calling Howard Link “Two-Spot”) or not. It can also be assumed he enjoys drawing on peoples’ faces while they sleep, as he’s done this with Allen before in the past, though whether it was out of boredom, his own personal amusement, or both isn’t known.
Despite the fact that Bookmen aren't supposed to become friends with or get attached to anyone, Lavi has obviously gotten close to certain members of the Order. He’s sought revenge for Allen against Tyki, and has shown blatant protectiveness of Lenalee alongside shedding tears for her. The biggest indicator of his care for them is when he decides to sacrifice himself to save them after gaining control of his body again following his victory over Road.
He usually speaks in a relaxed tone, never formal. He enjoys sleeping, napping, and has a no-brainer interest in reading. His favorite food is yakiniku (grilled meat) while his least favorite is wasabi. He evidently doesn’t like tears, either, or at least he doesn’t know how to handle them; this is proven by how he reacts to the girl Colette in his Reverse Novel story and Lenalee crying. (i.e. Frantically asking Bookman what to do and merely staring without saying a word.) Lavi is human, but his race is unknown; he’s described as being mixed.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Chapter 171, after his talk with Bookman.
[journal post]:
Did I… pass through the Ark somehow?
[Maybe thanks to another potion of the Supervisor’s? With a disgruntled frown, Lavi decides he wouldn’t put it past the man to have slipped something that would have led to involuntary movement or some such into his drink or food, for whatever reason... Nah, even Komui wouldn’t go that far! Maybe Central…? Bookman had said to be careful.
So a very confused, red-haired Exorcist rubs the back of his head as his one uncovered eye scans his surroundings, calculating and taking all of it in. It’s no place he recognizes.]
Ah, Komui? Gramps? … Anyone?
[After a moment of silence and coming to the conclusion that no one was going to respond to his normal voice, he lifts his hands to cup around his mouth when an exceptionally gorgeous blond female catches his attention. Needless to say that instead of yelling to catch the attention of anyone who might recognize him, he shouts:]
STRIKE~!
[third person / log sample]:
It was undoubtedly some ungodly hour, but Lavi found he didn’t care. It had become routine for him to stay up through all hours of the night a few nights per week, and most of the credit for that went to his lovely mentor for assigning him entire books to memorize before the next sunrise. A yawn escaped him as he tiredly rubbed at his eye with one hand while flipping the page of the open text in front of him with the other. It was the last one; sleep would be able to take his body soon.
Sleep was something he adored, but it was more of a luxury than anything those days. Between battling akuma, training, battling more akuma, writing records, and musing over his suspicions as to what had truly become of General Cross, there was hardly any time to spare for slumber. He barely got to see his fellow Exorcists in their leisure time, although… perhaps that was a good thing. Not being around Allen, Lenalee, Kanda, Krory, Miranda, or any of the others allowed him time to not be conflicted with his goals as a Bookman’s successor. When he was by himself he didn’t have to fake a smile, a grin, or a laugh, or by some off chance slip into his comfort zone where he felt completely at ease with them and almost forgot who he was. When he was alone with just ink and paper, he had no emotions that plagued him, because it was just that-ink and paper, which didn’t require friendship or love.
Again he rubbed at his eye, his vision having begun to blur as a result of his exhaustion and overexertion of his reading abilities. Knowing it would be better if he took a break, he rose from his desk and stretched, deciding to head to the cafeteria and pick up a late-night snack. Maybe he would have meat or maybe something different… probably meat.
As usual the chef Jerry was still awake and raring to go. The man had to have seen Lavi coming because by the time he reached the window, a plate of freshly grilled meat was waiting for him. It certainly was an odd thing to be considered a snack, but the chef never questioned his taste.
“Fast as always, I see~ Nice job, Jerry!” he exclaimed cheerfully, one of his usual smiles brightening up his features as he took the plate and the cup of coffee offered to him. He started to turn, but paused to receive a suggestion about getting more sleep because he looked terrible. “Aha, you really think so? I’ll try, but y’know how the old Panda likes to see me suffer.” He laughed it off and waved the best he could while holding the plate and cup.
The trek back to the library was spent mentally reviewing the contents of books he had already studied. He recalled all of it, even smudges on the pages. Memorizing was an easy thing to do for him; he was so used to it, it was almost as simple and automatic as blinking. That was definitely a good thing since it often came in handy for someone in his position and would most certainly be useful to him in the future. Dates, times, locations, peoples’ names and faces-they all needed to be stored away somewhere when a pen and paper weren’t readily available, and as a future Bookman, it was his job to record them all.
Although, at that point in time, a Bookman-in-training wasn’t all he was. For the first time in history, his being was recorded as someone battling on the front lines. Every war up until then had been observed from the sidelines. Now he was fighting side-by-side with Exorcists as an Exorcist. He had his duties as a Bookman’s apprentice, but also as an apostle of Innocence. However… he and the current Bookman were only on the side of the Order by chance and it was becoming a feat to continue reminding himself of that fact. One day, they would have to leave. One day, everyone he had come to know as people would be left behind and thought of as nothing more than paper and ink.
