Well I guess I'll be throwing in my 2¢ now that I'm home.onedownJanuary 9 2006, 04:56:11 UTC
I agree that it is sad to watch friends lose their innocence, but it happens to almost everybody in time. People just don't stay kids forever. You shouldn't try to prevent yourself or others from changing, but you should try to help guide them as their friend, and prevent them from doing stupid shit.
Smoking falls under stupid shit. Getting drunk falls under stupid shit. Etc. Drinking in general is fine so long as you do it responsibly, i.e. not getting drunk because that overloads your liver and damages it. That, however, is beside the point. Drinking and sex are two things that are gonna happen. It's just how things work. Drugs and smoking, I personally want to say are simply bad, but everybody has control over their own decisions and they can do what they want, even if we don't want to see them throw their life away with that stuff.
You can't live in the past, you can't live solely in the present, and you can't live just for the future. Nostalgia is an okay thing. Tons of people look back to their past with regret, or longing, and that's fine every once in awhile, but it can't take over your life. You can't only live in the present though either. As much as we say not to worry about what's already happened, the reality is that we're going to whether we want to or not, everybody has bad memories and things they regret that surface from time to time. So I don't personally believe it's smart to go and live only in the moment, only to end up doing lots of things you will regret whether you want to or not. You do have a future, we all do, the odds that we are going to die in the near future is pretty slim, although yes the chance is always still there. Don't fuck up the future just because of the slight chance that there might not be one, don't live in the past because you can't change it, and don't neglect the past or future because you create them both.
