5-minute work-friendly face.

I left home this morning at 6am to catch a 7:35 flight to Kunming. On the plane, my father commented how tired and wan I looked. I laughed and said he had obviously gotten used to seeing me with makeup on, to the point where my normal face appeared sickly when I hadn't had time to put on blush and lipstick.

With the number of short business trips I've taken in the last three months, I have become pretty good at packing a small suitcase with everything I need for 3-4 days in a hotel. This is what's in my makeup bag kit when I'm travelling, all essentials after a late night with not enough sleep.

Looks like a lot when you list it all, but the routine of putting it on actually only takes a couple of minutes, and without it, I look like this.

Step 1: Moisturiser, sunscreen, foundation, concealer.
Armani Face Fabric is something I've had only for a month or so, and I like it for travelling because it's small and lightweight - no bulky glass bottles - and easy to work quickly with. Then it's a dab of Painterly Paintpot for the darkness on my eyelids, Touche Eclat for dark undereye shadows, and concealer for spots and redness. Because it isn't humid in Kunming, I haven't worn primer under foundation.

Step 2: Brows, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara.
A brow pencil through my brows to define, cover up patches and lengthen, then a soft wash of neutrals on my lids. Cool-toned browns suit my colouring and are almost impossible to mess up; if it goes on too dark, I just tone it down with a nude eyeshadow over the top. To turn it into a more dramatic night-time look, I use the bright blue along my upper lashes to just add a pop of colour, or add a bit more brown to outer corner of the eyelid or to the crease. Guerlain Eyeliner & Kohl Pencil in Brown is a soft, highly pigmented pencil, slightly shimmery and absolutely beautiful. The trick to foolproof eyeliner is to set it with a similar-colour eyeshadow on top, or just smudge slightly with an angle brush or cotton bud - this makes it less likely to move around and end up underneath your eye. Racoon eyes, obviously, are BAD (unless that's the look you're going for). Lastly, curl eyelashes and apply one or two coats of mascara; I normally use brown for a natural look.

Step 3: Contour, blush, powder, lipstick.
Zen in the hollows on my cheeks and beside my temples to give the illusion of depth, then a bit of Blushbaby on the tops of my cheeks for a slight flush. Both are natural-looking, no-brainer shades for me. Finally, a light dusting of translucent powder all over the face to set the makeup and make it last, following by a little bit of lipstick. Mademoiselle and Grenade are both pigmented, but not too opaque, so they're easy to apply in a flash. Grenade, especially, is an excellent day-to-night lipstick, because you can apply both it sheer and blot to a pretty stain, or layer it for a deeper wine-red. Bright red lips are <333 - but not appropriate for meetings with Chinese academics.

None of these products really draw attention to the fact that I am wearing makeup. Their purpose is to make me look more polished and healthy.

Now I'm off to have a hot bath and a facial. I haven't had time yet to work on your fabulous fic prompts, but I will get to them eventually.
