The old Yellow Terror never get old, at least on this continent. Wasn't it written during the Keating years, when improving relations with East Asia were starting to threaten our national "white" identity?
Oh! Wow. Really? I...must have missed that entire aspect of the series while I was busy giggling at the angstiness of the whole thing. I AM SO DENSE. *hides*
No, I mean...seriously? I thought they never actually specified in the novel who the invaders were. And from memory (admittedly, dim and distant) I don't think any specific country actually fit the description/bill? Aside from character speculations, I mean.
Ugh. WHO CARES. *shakes fist at series and movie and inevitable spin-off stuff*

I only read the first couple, and I think you're right in that they're unspecified (because Ellie never saw them clearly anyway? and most of what they knew was rumour?). But I remember it being heavily hinted that the invaders came in from the north, and I always thought that they were meant to be either Japanese, Chinese, or Indonesian.
THEY'RE MAKING A MOVIE VERSION OF THAT BOOK
WHERE THE YELLOW HORDES FROM THE NORTH INVADE AUSTRALIA
AWESOME
:o(
