Since The Odd Couple was the only movie of the
5 funny movies I picked out available for streaming on Netflix, I curled up on my aunt's couch to watch it tonight after class and hanging out with Charles. It was, like most old movies, a bit "slow" compared to contemporary movies, and I found myself at moments easily distracted by the computer/whatever my aunt was watching on YouTube.
However, the dialogue was witty, the situational comedy clever, and overall the movie was quite fun. I found myself laughing even though I wasn't expecting to. Yes, the humor is sometimes a bit "low," in the sense that it was that obvious, awkward sort of humor that seems somewhat cheap. But it was easily balanced by the fun dialogue and the excellent storytelling. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are fantastic; their chemistry is both awkward and warm, and they are hilarious to watch.
The rest of the cast was equally funny, though they are more there to be certain types of characters to support Lemmon and Matthau. The poker guys' have a great group chemistry and keep the movie flowing quickly, while the British sisters (who are constantly being confused) have a raunchy, coy humor that is both annoying and endearingly funny.
I'm glad I started with this movie, since it seems the most different from the others I selected, and I think it transitions me nicely from the humor that I'm constantly consuming (the quick, sitcom type) to a movie like Caddyshack.
Of course, now I'm going to go home to do stuff and watch Sophie's Choice so I can finally return it to Netflix, so :/
