With the Lions 0-2, and Michigan 1-2...it's clear that it's going to be a painful year for football fans in the state of Michigan.
Fortunately, the Michigan Tech/Northern Michigan football game this week will be televised (Thursday, I think?) on FSN. Don't ask me why...
I'm not going to sit here and say that Michigan should have won yesterday's game. However, I don't think Notre Dame actually went out and won that game; Michigan went out and lost it, and since someone had to win, Notre Dame was in the right place at the right time.
I'll give some credit to the Irish for being in the right place at the right time and flying around when the ball was on the ground, but I won't give them credit for actually causing turnovers. In the end, Michigan turned it over 7 times - 5 fumbles and 2 interceptions (both by Sheraton, so Threet should be our permanent starting quarterback at this point...).
The first two turnovers (the backwards pass to minor and the second fumbled kickoff) both turned into touchdowns on a short field for the Irish, making the game 14-0 before most people had their first beer opened.
Now, walk with me in a hypothetical world...we throw out those first two scores. Shorten the game by 5 minutes.
Some new statistics: the final is Notre Dame winning 21-17, despite five michigan turnovers.
Now, if you were a voter for one of the polls, would you put a team that squeaked by San Diego State and defeated a (rebuilding) Michigan team by 4 despite 5 turnovers in your top 25?
Apparently there are 9 drunkards out there who would. Notre Dame got 5 votes in the USA Today Poll and 4 votes in the AP Top 25 poll.
Another interesting football game from yesterday was Auburn's win over Mississippi State, 3-2. I was actually sorta intrigued by the game, because it was (a) close and (b) sloppy. I think there were 4 turnovers in the last 5 minutes or so, giving Miss State several chances to pull out a win...but all they could do was turn the ball back over.
I guess that's all my ranting for now.
