Illyria stood in Cordelia’s living room. She had a puzzled look on her face. She holds a picture of Cordelia, Angel, and Wesley on her hand. She looked determined to figure out this puzzle. On the other side of the house, in her room, Cordelia awoke to a strange sound. She still hadn’t gotten used to the idea of Illyria living in her home. As she got of the bed Phantom Dennis turned on her night light.
“Oh! Thank you Dennis.” She said groggily.
She walked towards the living room… Hmm… Nothing seems out of place., she thought, and then out of nowhere Illyria appears.
“Ahhhhh! Illyria, what are you doing there in the shadows playing with that picture? It’s like 3 in the morning… And why is it that everyone always likes to do this to me. Can’t you super beings make noise or hum while standing in the dark or something?”
Illyria just stood there, eyes are still fixed on the picture.
“I have been staring at this object for a sustained amount of time. ”
Cordelia almost chuckled. “It’s called a picture Illyria. And no, the little people inside are not trapped. These are just images…it’s like a moment frozen in time”
Illyria cocked her head. She turned around and stared at Cordelia for the first time since she came in the living room.
“You humans are strange. You make these…things…these pictures to amuse yourselves. To remind you of things that were, and will ever be again.”
She gives the picture back to Cordelia. She takes it and looks at it for a long time. Her face filled with emotion.
“They are not to amuse us…they’re just… Look Illyria, I am tired, okay? It’s like 3:05 AM and don’t YOU ever sleep? Come on. It’s been a long day.”
She puts the picture back where it belongs and walks back.
“It pains you…these memories. You wished things were back to the way they were.”
“Look, things will never be like they were. It’s just how it is. Things will never be normal around here.”
“I do not yet understand this world, perhaps someday I will, but I understand your sentiment.”
“Ok then, glad we had this little discussion. I’m going to bed. See you in the morning.”
And with that, Cordelia disappeared into her room. Illyria went back to the picture and stared at it. She could almost see her own reflection in it. She let the blue in her dissipate and the image of Fred take over her entire body.
Still facing the picture, and looking at her reflection in it she gave her best “Fred Smile” in the dark. “It would seem that it is a lot easier to live the lie, than to accept the ultimate truth.”
