A friend's post today got me looking at some more horse books or horse related things for the eldest, who is in a stage of 'girl and her horse' books right now. I loved horse stories when I was about her age, though not so much of the "girl and her horse" as much as books about real horses, I grew up on the fringe around horses, mainly through my godmothers farm and my mother taking me to horse races from a young age. There were plenty of 'legends' in the racing circuits that caught my imagination, stories usually perked up for younger readers- Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Secretariat.
While going through Amazon, I suddenly remembered one book about Black Gold. Turns out that they still
publish the book. It was a tear jerker, but a real good depiction about horse politics, I thought.
Then upon the recommendations from that book, it mentioned another one from the same author, which I remember my 4th grade teacher reading to us.
Brighty of the Grand Canyon. Not about a horse, but a Burro.
I might have to get Brighty to read again myself before handing it to the eldest. I dont remember how it ends, or actually many other details other than I remember bawling about something in it as hard as I did during E.T.
