It had been a long time coming, everyone agreed. Xander shook his head and smirked. Anya didn't even blink. Willow giggled. Tara smiled knowingly. Dawn rolled her eyes. Buffy and Giles looked hurt.

"You're not surprised?" Buffy asked.

"You guys have been acting married as long as I can remember," Dawn said. "It's about time you got the benefits."

Giles squeezed Buffy's hand gently.

"Yes, well," he said uncomfortably, "we'll certainly take that under consideration, Dawn. So you don't mind that I'm dating your sister?"

"She's in a better mood when she's got a guy. I'm all for this." Dawn cocked her head and looked hard at the pair. "In fact, she's been in a really good mood since...you guys haven't - eeeeiiieewwww! You've done it already, haven't you?"

Buffy and Giles both did their best to school their faces into blank masks.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Buffy said stiffly.

"Nor do I," Giles added.

"The sex," Xander said. "You've had the sex."

"Xander!" Willow scolded. "That's rude. Anyway, they wouldn't before they told us they were going out, would they?" She turned to face Buffy. "You wouldn't, would you?"

Buffy and Giles both did their best, but couldn't help blushing. Their minds both cast back to the fateful events of the last week.

*****

Day 1, Monday:

The shop was closed and everyone else was gone. It had been a long, hard, sweaty training session. Buffy needed a release for all her pent-up energy. Since Riley left, she'd needed her training more than ever. It was the only way to deal with the restless fire in her soul. She lunged.

Giles allowed his inner Ripper out. He grinned as he managed to take Buffy unaware and drop her to the mat. Quickly, he straddled her, his face mere inches from hers, his hands holding hers stretched above her head.

"I win," he said.

"So give the man a prize," Buffy said. "You've got me helpless."

"You're not helpless. I wouldn't like it if you were."

"But you feel like the big man now, don't you," she taunted.

"I am a big man," he said with a smirk. "A very big man."

"Was that your idea of a come-on line, Giles?" Buffy giggled. "'Cause I gotta tell you, no guy feels small in a cup."

Giles looked surprised. He blinked.

"You thought I was talking about...I meant that I'm tall." His face moved still closer to hers. "But I am fairly large, if you want to know the truth."

"Do you think I need to know that?" she said.

"I'm beginning to think you want to." he returned. "You could have tossed me off like a feather as soon as I had you down. Why are you still lying there?"

"Maybe I like it here."

"Why?"

She looked away. He took her chin in one strong hand and made her face him again.

"Why are you still lying there?" he asked again, insistently. "We both know you're stronger, quicker, and more flexible than I am. Why have you let me take you down four times today?" He let his finger trail down her cheek. "Do you think I'll like you better if you're weak? If so, you couldn't be more wrong."

"I - I just...forget it."

Buffy rolled away and stood. She picked up a towel from the pommel horse and used it to mop her brow. She shivered when she felt Giles approach her from behind.

"You're sad that Riley's gone," he said. "You're worried that you're not attractive because you're stronger than most of the men you know. You're afraid I'll leave if you don't prove you need me to be the strong one. And you're terrified to be alone."

"So that's what's going on in my brain," she said with a failed attempt at a casual laugh. "Good thing I have you around to tell me what I'm thinking. When exactly did you get a degree in psychology, anyway?"

"I didn't," he said softly. "But I know you very well. You never have believed that your strength makes you beautiful. You consider it a flaw to be covered up. Sadly, that means you attracted a man who had a deep-seated need to protect someone in a very traditional way. When he found you didn't need the sort of protecting he wanted to give you, he felt useless. What you need is a man who doesn't need to be in charge. You need a partner. Someone to give you the sort of protection you do need and let you take care of the things you're perfectly capable of handling on your own." He placed a hand on her shoulder. "You need someone who wants to be with a strong woman. You need someone who can do things you can't and lets you do the things you can."

"What I need is more exercise," Buffy said. She winced at how brittle her tone was. "And I need to get a good night's sleep."

"You haven't been sleeping?" Giles asked. "Do you know what the problem is?"

"You really don't want to know," she said as she tossed the towel aside and curled up on the couch.

He smiled indulgently and sat next to her.

"You know, Buffy," he said, "I've got some experience with being lonely and sexually frustrated. If you don't have someone you can go to, you know it's perfectly normal to...well...to please yourself. And so long as you're careful about partners and honest about your intent, there's nothing wrong with a casual affair, either."

"With you?" she asked.

His eyes darted to her lips, then back to her eyes.

"I'm not sure I could be casual with you, Buffy."

"And what if I don't want a casual affair?"

"Don't try to start something serious if all you're looking for is release." He leaned closer. "Only do it if you're really interested in something more permanent."

She looked up at Giles. He loomed over her, but did nothing. The decision was hers to make.

Her hand reached up, curled around the back of his head, and drew him down to her lips.

The first kiss was soft, hesitant, questioning. The second, though, quickly became heated and certain. Buffy made a soft sound of surprise when Giles pulled her into his arms and crushed her to his chest. Again and again, he kissed her passionately. When Buffy opened to him, he took the invitation eagerly. His tongue swept into her mouth, tasting, teasing, tangling with her own. Buffy groaned in pleasure.

At last, the need for breath became too great and they pulled back. Giles continued to nibble his way down her cheek to the base of her throat.

"I've wanted you for so long," he said between kisses.

"I never knew."

"I didn't mean you to know." He stopped kissing her and looked into her eyes. He smiled at the dark, slightly blurred gaze she gave him. "You weren't ready to know before. You were too young, too unsure of yourself. I didn't want to pressure or frighten you. You needed to come to me at your own pace, or not at all."

"Giles?"

"Yes?"

"Stop analyzing us and kiss me again, okay?"

"With the greatest pleasure."

For some time, their lips were too busy to use for talking. Giles plundered Buffy's mouth hungrily and she returned the favor with enthusiasm and skill.

"Giles," she murmured when she pulled back from the kiss, "do you want me as much as I want you?"

"That depends on how much you want me," he teased. "Tell me. How much do you want me?"

"So much that I don't care if we do it right here on the couch," she said. "Hell, I don't care if you lean me over the pommel horse. I need you right here and right now."

"Really?" Giles' eyebrow rose in surprised amusement. "If I'd realized how much you wanted my body, I'd have done my best to seduce you months ago."

"Months ago, I had a boyfriend."

"Yes, and that did give me pause on the seduction front. I don't care to tempt women away from their lovers." He ran his fingers over her cheek. "I'm glad you came to me on your own."

"Less talk," she said. "More kissing."

She crawled into his lap and began devouring his lips hungrily with her own. Her fingers tangled in his hair as eagerly as her tongue slipped against his. He kissed his way up her cheek and across to her ear.

"Were you serious about that pommel horse?" he asked.

"You'd really do that?"

"I like being creative in lovemaking, but I've never done that before. I think it sounds fun."

"You're serious, aren't you?" she giggled.

"Yes. Were you?" he challenged.

She stood. He watched carefully for any sign of what was going on in her mind. When she smiled, he answered with one of his own.

"If I'd known you'd be this much fun, I'd have done this a long time ago," Buffy said. "I've always wanted to try sex somewhere other than a bed."

She stripped off her top and toed off her sneakers. Giles immediately took the hint and began to undress, too. Soon Buffy was completely naked and Giles was down to his sweatpants. He looked Buffy straight in the eye as he hooked his thumbs into the waistband of his sweats and slid them down his long legs. She giggled at the sight of his athletic supporter, but he just quirked en eyebrow and pulled it off.

Buffy drew in a quick breath when she saw him naked for the first time. Her eyes swept eagerly over his body.

"Nice," she said.

"Likewise," he agreed. "Buffy, before we go any further, I have to ask, are you protected?"

"Oh. Um. I guess not," she said. "I sort of stopped taking the pills when Riley left. Crap. I guess that's it, huh? Unless you brought some handy condoms with you, which would be insanely prepared even for you."

Buffy sighed and bent to find her panties. She gasped when she felt Giles wrap his arms around her from behind and whisper in her ear.

"Don't be ridiculous," he said. "There's a great deal we can do to satisfy one another even I can't be inside you. Can't you feel how much I want you?" He rubbed himself against her from behind. "Don't you want to touch me? There are so many things I want to do for you. I want to touch you and taste you and make you come."

"God, that sounds incredible," Buffy moaned. She could feel him getting harder and longer against her backside. "But I can't wait to feel you inside me."

"Oh you will," he said. "You'll feel me anywhere, any way you want. And right now, I'd like to touch you." He kissed the nape of her neck several times, smiling when he felt her shiver in pleasure. "Sex isn't just about penetration, you know. There's a great deal more we can do to satisfy one another. And I guarantee you, you won't leave this room wanting."

He kissed her softly from her shoulders, up the nape of her neck, to her earlobe, running his tongue over the sensitive flesh. His hands, in the meantime, explored her belly, her thighs, the valley between her breasts, and down to the soft vee of curls that framed her sex.

Buffy moaned again and writhed against her new lover. Already he knew how to elicit powerful responses from her body. She could feel the hunger building between her thighs. Her hips began to push back against his hardness. When he groaned and reached for her breast, she gasped and smiled.

"More," she breathed. "Give me more."

"Mmm...I love a woman who knows what she wants and takes it," he said softly. He covered both her breasts with his large hands. "Tell me what you want."

"I want...ooh, I want you to know...I'm about to lose my balance!"

They went down in a heap on the floor as Buffy's knees gave way. She shrieked. He giggled. They lay tangled together, laughing and kissing on the mats.

"Are you alright?" Giles asked between laughs.

"Yeah, I guess," Buffy giggled. "I feel sorta silly, but at least the landing was pretty well padded."

He sat up and pulled her into his lap, his hard length sandwiched between their bellies.

"Perhaps we'd better sit for a while and leave the pommel horse for another time." He stroked the hair back from her face and kissed her hungrily. "Tell me, Buffy, have you ever practiced the fine art of frottage?"

"Fromage?" Buffy said in disbelief. "Doesn't that mean cheese in French?"

"Not fromage, frottage," Giles said. "It's actually a much prettier term for...I believe you might know it as dry humping."

"Okay, isn't that what you do before you learn how to really have sex?"

"I told you before, penetration isn't all there is to sex. I've had partners who preferred things you don't seem to consider really sex. This can be just as intimate, just as satisfying, with the right person. And since we haven't any condoms, creativity is a must."

"Yeah, but how creative is that? It's just rubbing."

"It's friction," Giles corrected softly. "It's a connection between two bodies. It's heat and passion and restraint." He kissed her in a lingering caress of his lips against hers. "It's delicious." He urged her up. "Go lie down on the couch, Buffy."

With only a slight hesitation, she obeyed.

"You're sure about this?" she asked.

"Absolutely certain."

He stood and went to her. For a long moment, he just looked at her, his eyes roaming her body. Buffy shifted slightly to cover herself. She'd never felt so utterly naked before.

"No," he said. "Don't be afraid to let me see you."

Gently, he shifted her legs apart. Buffy allowed her arms to relax against the rough material of the sofa. Giles was still looking, but Buffy suddenly felt better about it. His eyes held no disappointment, no criticism. In fact, they were warm with delight and dark with passion.

"So beautiful," he murmured. "So strong." His hand brushed softly against her mound. "So wet. Is that for me?"

"Yes."

She writhed in pleasure as his fingers continued to caress her warmth, exploring every fold, covering his hand with her scent.

"Oh, Giles, that's so good."

One fingerpad drifted lazily over Buffy until it found her most sensitive spot. At her gasp, Giles smiled and began to rub tiny circles over it. He watched her eyes shut and her mouth open as her entire face expressed her desire for him. Her hips rocked, seeking his finger now, begging for release.

She groaned in disappointment when the finger was suddenly gone.

"Giles," she begged. "Giles, please."

He just smiled and climbed atop her on the sofa. Buffy spread her legs wider to accommodate his body. When they were positioned with his hard length across her belly and his thigh between hers Giles kissed her hard and began to thrust gently.

Buffy's eyes widened then drifted shut at the delicious sensation. It was so close and yet so different from her previous experiences with lovemaking. All the while he rubbed against her body, Giles kept up his tender, passionate kisses on her lips, her cheeks, her jaw, her ear, her throat. She'd never felt so utterly adored before. It was almost more stimulating than the hard-muscled thigh producing the erotic friction that kept her at the edge of release. So close, so close.

Her heart beat wildly and she could feel his pounding just as hard, almost in harmony with hers. The curls on his chest tickled her breasts wonderfully. His kisses nearly drowned her with his hunger for her body and soul. She pressed harder against his body. Her breathing grew more erratic, she shuddered, his cock throbbed hard between them.

She could feel herself falling, falling over the edge, giving herself utterly to Giles. Then she could hear his breathy cry as he followed her over, offering up his very essence to her, a proud sacrifice and a gift.

It seemed a very long time before she was again fully aware of her surroundings. Sometime in the interim, Giles had shifted them so he wouldn't risk crushing her. He still cradled her in his arms as if she was something fragile and precious.

"Hey," he murmured as he dropped a warm kiss on her forehead.

"Hey, stud," she said with a grin.

"Stud, eh? So I take it you enjoyed that?"

"Fishing for compliments is so not sexy," she teased.

He just chuckled and pulled her a bit closer. They lay in silence for a time, her fingers exploring his chest hair while his fingers tangled in her blonde tresses. Again, her lips sought his. They enjoyed a long, lazy cuddle until they could almost forget the rest of the world existed. Almost.

"What happens now?" Buffy asked at last.

"I suppose we clean ourselves up and get dressed," Giles sighed.

"Not that. After that."

"You patrol, I go home and do a bit more research on our little problem with the appalling dress sense."

Buffy sat up and glared slightly at Giles.

"Not that. I mean us. What happens with us?"

"What do you want to happen with us?"

"You said...you said this wasn't casual."

Giles couldn't suppress a smile.

"Good lord," he giggled. "You really don't know?"

"Know what?" She hated how tiny her voice sounded to her own ears.

"I hope you're not going to expect flowery speeches about how much I love you every time we have sex, because I don't make them. I do, though, you know."

"Do...what?" Buffy asked. "I got a little lost in that one."

"Love you."

"Really?"

"Of course I do, you silly woman! Do you really think I'd put up with you if I didn't?"

"And here I thought it was that paycheck that kept you coming back for more," she grinned.

"Well, that is an excellent benefit," he mused, "but I think it's more because I can't imagine myself without you now."

"Me, neither," she said. "I can't see me without you."

"Then what's all the fuss about? Do you really need it spelled out again?"

"Humor me. I like to be reassured."

"In that case," Giles said, "what happens now is we make love whenever we like, occasionally express our mutual adoration verbally, and even go on a date now and again. Other than that, we do as we've always done. We train, we bicker, and we tease one another mercilessly in between battles against various and sundry detestable villains."

"Okay, we do all that, but do we spring this on the gang all at once, or what?"

"Ah. That. I don't know. Did you want to make a big announcement? Throw one of your infamous parties? Rent a billboard?"

"Actually, I was thinking of sort of keeping it quiet - just for a few days or so - and trying to figure out how to tell this to my mom and Dawn without giving them both heart attacks." She looked at Giles with wide eyes. "I need them to be okay with this, and it might take a little finesse. Can you deal?"

"One week, Buffy," he said seriously. "I know you want to find a gentle way of breaking the news, but I don't think this will be quite as difficult as you seem to imagine. Anyway, if it is, I think it's their problem more than it is ours. You're a grown woman. You can make your own choices. I'll give you time to soften any blow to your mother, but I won't go creeping about for months while you work up the nerve to be honest with the people who love you."

"One week," she agreed. "I don't want to creep, either. But having a sexy secret for a few days isn't creepy. It's sorta nice."

With a final kiss, they rose and cleaned themselves up as best they could. Giles smiled to himself as he thought how good his shower would feel when he got home.

"I'm gonna have to hit the shower the instant I get home," Buffy said with a rueful laugh. "At least that's normal, though, after training. I just never worked up this much of a sweat playing with crossbows before."

"Care for a ride home?"

"How chivalrous!" Her eyes danced with mirth. "But I think I'll take a rain check. If you drove me home right now, I might stay in the car with you making out all night."

"And this would be a bad thing, because...?"

"You're a bad influence on me," she laughed.

In lieu of a verbal reply, Giles leaned down and kissed Buffy. When he straightened up, he was still smiling.

"What?" she asked, checking her hair to make sure it wasn't too horribly rumpled. "Bed hair? Serious lipstick smear?"

"No. I was just thinking about what I'm going to do with you on that pommel horse one night soon."

"Sometime this week?"

We'll see." He kissed her on the cheek and held the training room door for her. "Training at the usual time tomorrow. Oh and Buffy?"

"Yeah?"

"Bring a change of clothes. We'll get some dinner, after."

She could feel his eyes on her as she left the building.

"This is going to be one interesting week," she said to herself.
