Clinton's campaign: The Five Stages of Grief

Jun 05, 2008 03:43

A slightly amusing thought from the LA times blog (linked from electoral-vote.com): Hillary's campaign demise matches the classic five stages of grief. My take:

1) Denial. This one is so obvious it hardly needs explanation, with Clinton's aides insisting she could still win, all the way to the bitter end.

2) Anger. The Michigan credentials battle was just plain acrimonious; Clinton supporters arguing that the committee was trying to disenfranchise Michigan voters, nevermind the fact that Clinton and Kucinich were the only names on the ballot.

3) Bargaining. Clinton publicly asks for the VP slot, which could make Obama appear insensitive to Clinton supporters if he refuses, or annoy everyone else if he accepts.

4) Depression. She's still waiting to concede, probably trying to figure out what to say and recovering from the realization that there are no other options.

5) Acceptance. Well, this remains to be seen, but if she wants to have a political future she's going to have to swallow her pride and campaign for Obama and try to reconcile the huge divisions she's tried to draw that have probably turned some voters off from Obama or voting at all.
