I kinda agree with you about the family thing. I find horror movies kinda put themselves in limited categories nowadays.
1. creepy "make you jump" movies, fun during the movie, afterwards you feel unfulfilled.
2. Gore-fest. Where the main point was obviously "lets make this as gross as humanly possible".
3. Disturbing/upsetting. Where they go to such blatantly sick lengths that you just feel uptight and sick.

I found Hills have Eyes to be number 3. I actually shed a few tears when the mom was in shock and dying slowly, and (remaining) others had to see that. Also, not as much as the dog, but I HATED when he killed the bird. I have pet birds. birds do not stand a fucking chance. not only are they caged, so they don't have the chance to run, but they don't really have any defenses, like claws are even biting. I was upset.

I didn't read 'bout Snakes on a plane, as I'm going to see that Tuesday, and didn't want to risk reading something I should see for myself.

Yay for getting rid of Canad! Nazi bosses suck. My boss at Smittys was a terrorist, and made me feel like a piece of shit, ALL the time. So kudos, my min. wage brotha.
