ivan: 20 hours in a rav4 with 4 people i only sort of like
katrina: 8 hours caravanning, aunt helen--the houston end, very good, all things considered. then, the end of it. terrible, incomprehensible. new orleans life, the failed experiment. not the destruction anyone expected, but there *were* warnings of destruction. i never regretted evacuating. that one WAS being forecast as very serious. i ran like hell and planned before pretty much anybody else i knew
gustav: 4 of the hottest, most miserable hours ever to natchez, then trapped in a house, 1/2 of the people or more bugging the crap out of me, that STILL got hurricaned. jonny almost leaving for god knows where at the height of the storm. i leaped into his car and tagged along, we went to a Shoney's and watched the trees lash around in the wind. so depressed, both of us. he says it was the beginning of the end of it for him. i see now that it was.
should i evacuate? for a category 1/2, now that helen is dead and there's no houston option, remembering how that storm looked outside a plate glass window at a shoney's at what felt like the end of civilization
nah
i'm not going fucking anywhere. not unless you make me.
(also, the katrina comparisons the national news is making are really goddam unreasonable.)
