Pairing: Chenzel, Cheno/OC
Summary: Ok, I got the idea for this fic from a few different places. First off, this AU, so, if you don't like that, don't read it. Alright, so, Idina is a vocal/drama teacher and Kristin is a cafe cashier/actress. This is set in 1994, New York City. This is the first chapter of I don't know how many.
Author Notes: Yes, it is possible to 23 years old and be a teacher. The classroom design and set up I copied from the design and set up of my old chorus classroom. Ok, let's get started.
Once in a lullaby.'>
Idina Avery walked quickly into the little coffee shop, a place recommended by her friend Luce. The smell of hot coffee hit her as she neared the counter, standing in line and trying to decide what to get. She started looking in her purse for her wallet and didn’t notice when it was her turn to order.
“Miss? Miss, it’s your turn,” a perky blonde behind the counter said, causing Idina to halt her pursuit of her wallet and look up.
“Oh! Sorry!” She smiled sheepishly at the woman, moving forward and placing her purse on the counter.
“That’s alright. What would you like?” The blonde smiled. Idina looked back up at the menu board for a couple seconds.
“Um…Café Mocha sounds good.”
“Ok, two dollars and ninety-five cents please.” Idina reached into her purse and reached around for her wallet, finally grabbing it and pulling out five dollars and handing it to the woman.
“Here you go, ma’am.” The blonde said, handing Idina a receipt and her change. Idina smiled at her and put a dollar in the tip jar next to the register.
“Have a nice day ma’am, thank you!” The woman grinned broadly at her.
Idina smiled and moved out of the line, crumpling the receipt in her hand and tossing it into a trashcan. The remaining dollar and nickel she put in her pocket. After a couple minutes the guy at the pick-up station called out her drink.
“Café Mocha!” Idina moved forward, grabbing the hot coffee and nearly dropping it as it burned her hand. She grabbed a cardboard coffee holder and glanced at her watch, noticing that she only had 10 minutes to get to the school.
“Shit!” She said, grabbing the coffee and rushing out the door of the café, not noticing that her wallet fell out of her open purse. No one else seemed to notice the wallet on the floor except for the tiny blonde.
She walked around the counter, towards the wallet and picked it up. Opening the wallet, she saw a school I.D. card:
Idina Avery
Park East High School
Drama/Vocal Teacher
230-34 E 105th St
The woman decided to return the wallet at her break, in two hours. In the meantime, she put the wallet in her own purse in the back room.
**********
Idina was out of breath from running, trying to be careful and not spill her coffee everywhere. Thankfully the café was only about 7 blocks away from the school, so it only took her about 5 minutes to get there. She threw the lanyard around her neck over her should as she took the steps to the front entrance of the school two at a time. She pulled the door open and ran inside, coming to a skidding halt in the main office.
“I-I’m…I’m Idina Avery!” She gasped; the woman at the desk was surveying her curiously.
“Idina Avery, Drama and Vocal teacher?” Idina nodded, breathing heavily. She grabbed the lanyard and pulled it to the front, showing the woman the copy of her I.D. card.
“Alright. Welcome to Park East High, Miss Avery. You’re in room 458, here’s your keys, and you’d better hurry because the bell’s about to ring.”
“Thank you!” Idina called, leaving the office and jogging down the hall. She realized she must be in the 100 building, and jogged a little faster.
By the time she made it to her class, three buildings, one U-turn and a staircase later, she was more out of breath than before. She figured that the large group of pimply, awkward looking teenagers must be her first period class.
“Sorry I’m late guys!” She called, making her way through the group to the door. She unlocked the door and let her sleepy class file in. She flipped on the lights and looked around the room, seeing that it was actually not a room at all, more like a small auditorium. There were at least 150 seats, in rows going all the way to the back of the room, a stage, and an office. She was also pleasantly surprised to find a bathroom, a piano, another room with another piano, and a small balcony over the office.
Her class was sitting in the seats, spread out and watching her intently. She took the schedule out of her purse and saw that this was the beginning mixed chorus class.
“Um…Hi. I’m Miss Avery and er…welcome to beginning mixed chorus. Alright, so…as you may know, I’m not the teacher you were assigned. Mrs. Mackie had to retire for…personal health reasons. So, here I am. I’ve never taught anything before, so you’ll just have to bear with me and-“ She was interrupted by a knock on the door, “Hold on guys.”
She walked over to the door and opened it, revealing a girl with a folder in her hands.
“Miss Avery?” Idina nodded. The girl handed her the folder and walked away. Idina looked down at the folder labeled “ATTENDANCE” with a note attached to it.
I heard you were in a rush this morning, don’t worry about it, the first day is never easy. Here’s you attendance, and btw, I forgot to tell you over the phone last week, but the room is soundproof. Just thought you might like to know. Have a good day.
Principal Whitehead
Idina smiled and made her way back to the middle of the room, next to the long table where she’d thrown her purse.
“Alright, let’s do attendance. When I call your name just say “here” ok? Ok. Susan Abernathy?”
“Here.”
*********
After she’d finished with attendance, Idina decided to do some vocal warm-ups to get things moving.
“Ok, just follow the notes alright? I’ll play the scale once, so you can hear, and then just sing along with me the second time ok? Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do!” She played it once and then began to play it again, slower this time, the kids singing it with her.
Ten minutes later she decided that they were properly warmed-up, and she was trying to decide on a song they could sing without the piano when someone raised their hand.
“Um, yeah?” Idina said, looking at the kid, trying to remember his name but couldn’t.
“Are you a trained singer?” He asked, in a rather high-pitched voice, causing a row of girls behind to giggle loudly.
“Uh, yeah, I am,” She said, wondering where this was going to go.
“Will you sing us something?” Someone else asked.
“Um…well…alright. Does everyone know the song ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow?’” She asked, they all nodded and leaned forward eagerly. Idina cleared her throat and began.
“Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?”
When she had finished the class just stared at her, and she blushed. Thankfully the bell rang and the kids filed out, Idina hearing parts of their conversations.
“Did you hear that?”
“I wish I could sing like that!”
“Dude, she’s so hot!”
Laughing, Idina grabbed her purse off of the table and walked over to the office. She turned the lights on and looked around, a main room and a back room. The main room had a desk with a computer on it and shelves on the walls. The back room had a mini refrigerator, a freezer and a microwave. Idina put her purse on the desk and went back out into the classroom, to find her next class already coming in.
Looking at her schedule again, she found that this was the intermediate chorus class. She was hoping that this class would be as easy as the first, but those hopes were soon dashed when she saw the death stares she was receiving. She knew this would be a very long, long period.
********
After the second class of the day ended it was time for break, and Idina was glad because the intermediate kids were lethal and they didn’t seem to appreciate the fact that she had taken over their beloved old teacher’s job. Idina sighed and sat down on the stool she had found behind the curtains on the stage. She stared at the ceiling and didn’t notice the small blonde that had walked into the room and was now standing right in front of her.
