Title: The Value of X

Author: Poppy Z. Brite

Genre: romance

Approximate length: 183 pages

Rating: 8.5

Summary: Set in the toughest neighborhoods in New Orleans, Ricky and Gary are kindred souls who met in grade school, fell in love with each other at 16, and were faced with opposition from their families. They faced their biggest obstacle at the age of 18.

Assessment: The only reason I didn't rec this sooner is because I really don't feel I can do this story the justice it deserves. I look at my summary and think that it's unlikely to inspire anyone to find the book, but really, I love this story to pieces. Brite's Ricky and Gary are so wonderful and complex and achingly real, that I fell in love with them immediately. Other characters in the story are equally fascinating and the city of New Orleans and the restaurant kitchens where Ricky and Gary work are drawn so vividly that I feel like I'm there. This book made me laugh and really care about the characters. Brite's next two novels, Liquor and Prime continue the story of Ricky and Gary, and I love those books every bit as much as The Value of X.
