By getting Christianity: the First Three Thousand Years from the library. About two inches thick in hardcover. As far as I know it's an utterly mainstream, scholarly-based history of Christianity from its Judaic roots on down to the present. The bits I've skimmed seem to be matter-of-fact in tone, without hostility to nonbelievers.
I intend to read the thing straight through, with perhaps occasional breaks for lighter fare. Will report here as I go if anything strikes me as particularly interesting or cool.
