This was not Wellakh.
Nor was it the Crossings on Rirhath B, or Grand Central Station, or for that matter Mars, Io, or anywhere else Dairine normally stopped for an interplanetary rest. Not that it was a bad place for a rest-nice beach, blue sky, the ocean playing happily against the shore. She could definitely stop and take a break here.
Some of her things had fallen out of the otherspace pocket when she landed, and were scattered around her on the sand-the tent, pillow, and rather dented lunch. Huh. That's not good. Why wouldn't the pocket hold? But Spot was still there, picking spidery legs out of the sand, his fans whirring.
"Spot," Dairine said, flipping open his screen, "find out where in the universe we are, would you? Get back to me with coordinates, atmosphere, local Seniors, worldgates, the whole shebang."
"Affirmative," Spot said, the little eyes that appeared at the top of his screen narrowing in concentration. You know, Nita might be onto something. He really is getting weirder. She didn't have much time to think about it, though, because the computer's next words froze her.
"Negative information. No statistics." His thin digital voice sounded on the edge of panic. "No wizardry at all."
"-No-wizardry?"
Spot beeped at her. "Negative. Nothing. No wizards. No wizardry. No statistics." He just kept repeating it until she told him to stop.
At which point she tried just listening. There was water, and wind, and the calls of sea birds in the distance. Smaller animals, and larger ones-wolves?-and people.
But no wizards.
No Speech.
It was…quiet. And not in a good way.
"Spot," she said, cradling the computer in her lap, "not to sound cliché? But I don't think we're in Kansas anymore."
[Dairine lands on the island. Will arrives, and she greets him in the wizard's Speech, which fills him with glee. He helps her carry stuff back to the compound and warns her there are grumpy Jedi here. Remus comes by to introduce himself and answer questions; Dari almost says something embarrassing about the Harry Potter books. Then Padme shows up and gives Dari ten different kinds of heart attack while she tries to keep her Star Wars pillow safely hidden from view.]
