do you suppose that, waiting hands on eyes, Veronica has gone to hide?

It had been a long day. A long, nervewracking, more than slightly disturbing day, and Veronica Mars never wanted to live another one like it. Unfortunately, the way this island worked, he figured that was a lost cause.

That didn't mean he had to like it. On the bright side, the rain had long since stopped and the sand was dry again, so he took off ( Read more... )

Veronica looked up at the newcomer. Demi Moore . . . is surprisingly cute. Oh God, I'm a man. "After a day like this? I so need it."

"Thank God, no." Veronica paused, easing up onto his elbows. "Not that I look all that bad, all things considered, but I enjoy being a girl, thanks." He would resist the urge to sing. He would. "I haven't found any alcohol yet, but I'm not much of a drinker anyway. Who're you usually?"

"Sam?" Veronica said, a little horrified to hear his voice jump higher. "I'm Veronica. This is so messed up." Quietly, he thanked God it was kind of dark out. Secretly checking out (another?) girl was embarassing enough without finding out who was in the body. Oh God, so wrong, so wrong.

Veronica choked back a strangled noise of his own. There was no hope left for him. None. At this point, it was time to sell his soul to the devil for a ride home, because that's all the use there would be left for it. "I was here," he said, sitting up and crossing his legs. "But I got to stay the same then."

Gender identity crisis? Veronica wasn't even going to mention what meeting Archie had done to her earlier. Or that the head shaking and the grin were kind of distracting. Stupid body. Stupid island.

"Nothing, really. I was trying to investigate whatever this is," she admitted. "The island, I mean, not the - all of this. But it's no use when I don't know where any of it came from."

She couldn't stop the choked noise escaping this time, coming out as "Mmnfgh." Veronica swallowed and nodded. "It's just the whole multiple universes thing," she said slowly, "makes things just a little bit more complicated." Look at the ocean, Mars. The ocean is safe. The ocean is -

"I mean," she continued, voice just that bit too even, "I was hoping to date the materials. Figure out when they're from, I mean! And, er -" And that was wrong, too, because somehow the syllable now made her think of William. "- that doesn't help when it could have come from anywhere. Or this world, really." And then she couldn't help it anymore, helpless in this stupid body with too much space in it. She hazarded a glance back at Sam and a rueful smile. Oh God.

Veronica smirked, jolted out of her contemplation of just how weird it was to be on this side of things (What? she demanded of herself. He's cute when he's male, too. That didn't help.) "I hate to break it to you," she said dryly, leaning forward, "but, uh, I'm rooming with Hermione Granger. Here there be witches."

"Hey, it's okay. Believe me, I wasn't so calm when I found out," she said dryly, head tilted as she glanced out to sea again. "And neither was she when I told her she wasn't real." Veronica hadn't spoken much with her roommate since then. Despite agreeing to pretend the argument had never happened, things had been less than easy between them. "Besides, I think I just kind of figured I'd gone crazy at first. All I can do now is wait and see what I can figure out."
