do you suppose that, waiting hands on eyes, Veronica has gone to hide?

It had been a long day. A long, nervewracking, more than slightly disturbing day, and Veronica Mars never wanted to live another one like it. Unfortunately, the way this island worked, he figured that was a lost cause.

That didn't mean he had to like it. On the bright side, the rain had long since stopped and the sand was dry again, so he took off ( Read more... )

"You're not alone in that," he said with a shrug, stretching his legs out and leaning down on one elbow. "The not knowing where it came from, I mean." He looked up at her with what he realized a second later was a rather flirty smile. Do not flirt with Veronica, Sam, he told himself sharply. Do not flirt with a man even if it is Veronica. The two do not cancel each other out, they multiply to make you the sketchiest person around, and that's saying something.

She couldn't stop the choked noise escaping this time, coming out as "Mmnfgh." Veronica swallowed and nodded. "It's just the whole multiple universes thing," she said slowly, "makes things just a little bit more complicated." Look at the ocean, Mars. The ocean is safe. The ocean is -

"I mean," she continued, voice just that bit too even, "I was hoping to date the materials. Figure out when they're from, I mean! And, er -" And that was wrong, too, because somehow the syllable now made her think of William. "- that doesn't help when it could have come from anywhere. Or this world, really." And then she couldn't help it anymore, helpless in this stupid body with too much space in it. She hazarded a glance back at Sam and a rueful smile. Oh God.

"It is a little mind blowing," he agreed, "I mean, just throws you for a loop, you know. Especially not even knowing if this is our world, is Earth... I swear," he said with a laugh, his eyes still on Veronica's face (what, he thought defensively, it was a nice face even if it was male), "if I meet one more person who claims to be a superhero or a Jedi... what's next, Harry Potter?" He said this with the cocky assurance of someone who is confident that no such thing could be possible.

Veronica smirked, jolted out of her contemplation of just how weird it was to be on this side of things (What? she demanded of herself. He's cute when he's male, too. That didn't help.) "I hate to break it to you," she said dryly, leaning forward, "but, uh, I'm rooming with Hermione Granger. Here there be witches."

Sam closed his eyes in defeat and slumped forward, his forehead knocking against Veronica's arm. "I quit," he said, slightly muffled. "I really just quit." He looked up, his grin a little wild. "How can you approach this so calmly? I think of myself as being a pretty reasonable guy... girl... but this tests even my boundaries."

"Hey, it's okay. Believe me, I wasn't so calm when I found out," she said dryly, head tilted as she glanced out to sea again. "And neither was she when I told her she wasn't real." Veronica hadn't spoken much with her roommate since then. Despite agreeing to pretend the argument had never happened, things had been less than easy between them. "Besides, I think I just kind of figured I'd gone crazy at first. All I can do now is wait and see what I can figure out."

"Yeah, I can imagine being told you're not real could put a pretty big damper on your sanity," he said with a laugh. "That can't have been easy on you, though, I bet she thought you were crazy too." He sighed, rolling onto his back and putting his hands behind his head. "Waiting seems like a pretty good plan to me... we don't seem to be running out of time anytime soon, at least."

"God, I know," she sighed, easing back to lie propped up on her elbows. "But it only lasted a weekend last time. It can't be that bad, right?" Alright, so it was pretty bad. But at least it didn't look permanent yet, even if it was definitely wreaking havoc on what little was left of her sanity. Stop looking, Mars. AGH.

"Oh, I don't know," said Sam, craning his neck around to look at Veronica, grinning at her upside-down face. "It's pretty bad. Like I told my friend, there's a line between appreciating women and wanting to be one. I've never crossed it yet, and now I'm pretty sure I never will."

"So true," Veronica sighed. "Although I'd very much like to be one again." Not least because it was disconcerting how cute Sam was when he - she? - grinned like that. "I never had any desire to be a guy, that's for sure."

Sam laughed, clapping a hand to his mouth when it came out in that high giggly way he hated. Clearing his throat a bit, he dropped his hand and said, "Yeah, this is weird in more than just a physical way... It definitely messes with you, you know? Hormones are all different, you think kind of different..." he let that trail off, not really wanting to explore it further.

"Unfortunately, yeah," Veronica said dryly, although she couldn't help smiling a little. It was more than a little amusing to hear that giggle and know it was Sam doing that. "I do know. I mean, this is just - well, yeah, weird. And more than a little confusing."

Sam just nodded at that, dropping his head back onto his arms and sighing again. This was nice, comforting even, to just be for the moment, quiet and in the presence of someone who understood. He blamed the faint urge to touch her entirely on the aforementioned hormonal differences; he was also glad it was faint enough to ignore.
