The party for the island, is one of the few parties Kate can let Sam attend, as it's one of the few parties that doesn't actually start with boobs. It might end with them, but it's usually later into the night.

She's got Sam perched up onto her shoulders as they stroll, letting him grab at banners and ribbons and whatever else catches his eye. He's getting almost too big to do this comfortably, but she's determined to carry him around as long as he'll let her.

When he grabs the nearest head of hair with a triumphant crow, she realizes it's not the most well thought out plan.

"Ow," Maladicta snarls quietly, blue eyes going wide and rolling as far to one side as they can while her head is being held with remarkable stability by a very tiny fist.

"No, truly, ow. Kate. Your spawn."

"Hi!" Sam shouts down, as if Maladicta's ears weren't right there. "Sam Crew," Kate scolds, flicking at his chubby legs. "Uh huh, and I'm sure your little angel never grabs at hair."

"She goes for the fangs, actually," Maladicta said dryly, carefully disentangling herself from grasping baby fingers.

"Her da gets hung upon a good deal more than I do, though, in truth."

"She's going to be a very interesting teenager," Kate says, mildly, moving Sam just out of reach. "I look forward to watching her boss Sam around."

"That's more years away than I care to contemplate, thanks much," Maladicta said, shooting Kate a strongly disapproving look.

"What a thing to say to a person. Especially a former immortal. You could be a little more sensitive, you know," she added, sniffing out a little, then reaching up to absently tickle Sam's tummy.

"I could," Kate agrees, grabbing hold of Sam's feet as he tries to kick out. "But I thought vampire soldiers were too tough to require sensitivity."

"Vampire soldiers are," Maladicta said, looking vaguely put out to the point of being almost distant, "former vampire police officers, though, who can say."

"In that case I will be much more sensitive to your feelings," Kate says, barely even fighting a smile. "So, what do you think it's going to take to get a play made around here?"

"Holding Duck ransom," Maladicta replied without missing a beat, although when she actually thought about it, that would be great. Olivia loved Duck and he was handy as well as good natured. Then she had to wonder at the left over vampire bits of herself that thought an indentured servant sounded like a good idea.

Although it was free labor, so.

"Putting on a musical to gall him?" she added, thoughtfully, after a moment.

"Ugh, God, do I have to be in the musical," she groans. "Maybe Duck would go along with a fake kidnapping. If I dangle Sam in front of him he usually will go for anything."

"Clearly you do, or he won't feel the threat is real enough," Maladicta said.

"We should probably kidnap Duck in addition, just to make sure."

"Or we could force Duck to participate in the musical," she suggests. "Cats, I'm thinking. Do you know it? It's pretty much the worst one."

Sam's got quite a grip. I pull up quickly and manage not to spill my drink, but I still can't help but let out an "Eep!" Then, grinning ruefully, I said, "Hi, Sam." I backed up and gently tried to pry Sam's fingers loose. "Kate? A little help here?"

"I think you're on your own," Kate says, even as she reaches up to gently untangle Sam's fingers. "So, how's engaged life treating you?"

"Thanks," I said, as Sam's hand came free, only holding a couple of strands of my hair, I think.

"Engaged life is busy," I said. "I've been doing a fair chunk of the planning because Zell has a bunch of commitments taking up his time. But I've booked the flowers and the cake. Did you get your invitation?"
