Max feels pretty sure that he's supposed to still be scared after Halloween, and he wouldn't tell Bill or another grown-up because he'd probably get into trouble, but it was kind of awesome. There was this giant toy clown and it was totally scary and it was totally going to eat him but then Wolf came and he was like a super hero. "You are going to really hurt yourself!" calls Karen, standing to one side and watching all of this occur. She raises both eyebrows and folds her arms across her chest. Boys are so stupid.

"And nobody is going to kiss it better!"

Max lets out a grunt as he hits hard, rolling a few times just like Jason taught him. He tore a big hole in his suit and it's totally worth it. "I don't care!" he shouts. "I just saved the whole island and you just stood there and now you're going to get fire breathed on by a dragon."

"No, I am not," says Karen, who's totally in favour of make-believe until things get silly. It's all fun and games, her Mum always says, until somebody loses an eye.

Which has never happened, but it's a thought that always plays on Karen's mind.

"Yes you are!" he screams, running around her in wide circles. "You're gonna burn up and be a lump of coal and you'll be sorry you didn't listen to me. Because we're under attack! From all over!"

Karen rolls her eyes and crosses her arms across her chest. She huffs a breath out, blowing her hair out of her eyes.

"Boys are so stupid."

Max slows to a stop, panting a little and frowning right back. "Why aren't you playing? Did you forget how? Why are you being so boring? I don't have to play with boring girls."

"No," says Karen, eyebrows raised imperiously. "You don't. What are you even playing anyway?"

"Dragons!" he huffs, as if it should be obvious. "They're attacking the village and one just burst you into flames but you can be not burst into flames if you want to play, I guess."

Karen sighs again, and rolls her eyes. She brushes her blond hair back from her face.

"Okay," she says, finally. "But I'm not being a princess."

"That's fine," Max says, wrinkling his nose a little. "Princesses can't wrestle with dragons and stuff anyway because they've always got stupid dresses. Do you want to jump again with me?"

Thinking about it for a moment, watching him, Karen scoops her hair up and lets it drop again.

"Yes," she says, finally, with a very definite nod of her head. "Let's jump."

"Okay, but we should go really, really high," Max cries, grinning as he darts back to the swing. "And we'll jump at the same time and we'll both land on the same dragon!"

Taking a deep breath, Karen gives up. She throws herself into it and runs, long legs pounding as she charges towards the swings.

"We'll have him exactly where we want him!"
