Max feels pretty sure that he's supposed to still be scared after Halloween, and he wouldn't tell Bill or another grown-up because he'd probably get into trouble, but it was kind of awesome. There was this giant toy clown and it was totally scary and it was totally going to eat him but then Wolf came and he was like a super hero. Bella was just crossing in front of the swingset when Max went flying. Because it her klutz meant she had the worst timing ever, she looked up just in time to see the little boy arc through the air. Her hands went up automatically to catch him and she almost made it, both of them landing on the grass with Bella as his cushion.

She was smiling, though, when she looked up. "Hiya, Max."

"You're a dragon!" he screams right in her face before looking around for more enemy fighters. "And I just slay...slayed you! You're dead!"

"And who better to take me down than the fearsome Max, protector of all," Bella laughed from underneath her, thinking back to a childhood she thought long forgotten.

"I used to run with the Monsters, you know," he informs her. "And they were as big as houses so dragons aren't a really big deal."

"I do know that. And I used to run with wolves as big as horses," Bella nodded. "Too bad I don't have any of them with me now, I might have made it through alive. How are you going to take down the rest of the dragons now?"

"Are you from where Wolf is from?" Max asks, pretty sure that's how big Wolf was. "Well, maybe you're not totally slayed and we can go burn them up."

Bella frowned, she'd never heard Jake referred to as Wolf before. She'd also never met anyone with that name. Well, yet. "No, I'm from where Jacob's from, we've been friends since we were about your age, actually."

A smile crossed her face and she stood, ready to take him on her back if he wanted up. "Let's go find some dragons, then."

"I don't think I know him," Max decides, grinning before clambering up. "I think probably the dragons are near the farm. Because they really like to eat goats and cows."

"You'd remember Jake, he's really, really tall," Bella laughed and hefted Max onto her back. "Off we go then, saviors of the livestock!"

"Okay so we need to go fast because dragons like to eat cows and goats and then the island won't have milk and everyone will starve," Max explains.

"I'll do my best, for the sake of the cows, but me moving fast might mean we end up back on the ground again," Bella laughed, doing her best to keep them moving, not falling.

"Then I'll have to leap onto another dragon and you'll have to stay behind while I save everyone," he warns, tugging gently on her hair.
