"Okay, someone needs to go try out some of the rides with their boyfriend," Sam said, moving up to Cassie and steering her away by her shoulders from the gentleman with the southern drawl and increasingly loud voice. It was a bit rude, but whatever the argument was about was probably stupid anyways and this way she got away from it and saved face.
"Also, I want you to win me a pony. Preferably a Pegasus one. Although wasn't Pegasus just the name of one flying horse? What's the species called?"
“But…!” Cassie mocked glared at Sam as he dragged her away from her new friend. “Ugh fine….! Rematch, Mr. Tucker!” She called over his shoulder and grinned at the shouted affirmative.
Now she could give her full attention to Sam and showed this through a kiss on the cheek. “Aww Sam. I promise, not even handsome men with a sweet accent could turn my eye.” She teased with a grin while leading him over to a booth with milk bottles and plush Pegasus ponies as prizes. “Do you want the blue one or the yellow one?” She asked as she weighed the ball she had to throw in her hands, considering his question. “You know, I don’t know. I think the species got its name from that flying horse. But are they pegasuses, pegasui or is Pegasus plural too?”
"Wait, I wasn't even thinking that I had to be worried," Sam said, making a bit of a face. It's not that he was worried that Cassie would do anything like that, he just didn't know he was supposed to pretend to. Or if he thought that Cassie thought he would.
"And the blue one, it looks cooler than the other one. Like... at least 20% cooler."
The face just made her giggle and Cassie wrapped an arm around her neck so she could give him a proper kiss. She'd only been kidding, there was no need for Sam to be worried at all and she didn't expect him to be.
"The cooler one it is." She said as she tested the ball again before pitching it. Half the pyramid of milk bottles came tumbling down and she didn't even need the third ball to take it completely out.
Sam kissed her back before turning to watch her knock down the milk bottles with just two throws. Sports had never really been his thing, so he didn't really feel any need to try and impress or outdo her on that front.
"Sweet," he said, holding the animal at arms length to examine it. "Should I give her a name?"
"Makes sense, Rainbow Dash it is," Sam said with a bit of a shrug. It had a rainbow on its flank and a lightning bolt, which seemed to indicate that it was fast.
"So what should we do next? It's, uh, it's too bad they don't have a Tunnel of Love or something. Hey, I heard they have glass bottom boat rides! Also, go carts. Go carts would be awesome."
Sam felt rather smooth, having just slid that Tunnel of Love comment in there so nonchalantly. That's right, he had mentioned the L-word, just sort of slipped it in there in a perfectly natural way and then just breezed past it. He still wasn't even sure if he loved Cassie, but he could tell things were definitely going in that direction, and thought he was just try the word out to see how well it fit and what sort of reception it got.
Cassie petted the pony's mane before taking Sam's arm so they could walk through fair. And at first, she didn't seem to hear him. "Oh yeah! Go-carts would be fun! I bet..." Then she paused and looked up at him. "Tunnel of Love? Like...the ones with the big swan boats?"
It wasn't exactly natural and Cassie missed the context all together.
"Yeah, uh, yeah, big swan boats and stuff," Sam said with an eager nod. He really, really hoped that she wasn't going to pursue the subject right here, right now. It had been intended to be a sly way to introduce the topic in a way that would not have her want to talk about it right this moment.
"But hey. Go carts. Carts that go. Going carts. Let's you know exactly what you're getting, right?"
She'd missed something, Cassie was sure of that. Was Sam trying to tell her something with the Tunnel of Love bit? Or did he just prefer those kind of slow water rides? "Umm...okay. Are you alright?"
"I think I might have had too much cotton candy," Sam said. It wasn't an outright lie, really. Any cotton candy was probably too much for Sam and he did feel a bit fidgety.
"Oooookay. No more cotton candy for you then." Cassie gave him one more odd look before rolling her eyes. "So, Go-Karts or should I win Rainbow Dash a friend?"
"Okay, but if they have anything deep fried that normally isn't, I want that," Sam said. Back home, that was the staple of fair foods, deep fried things. Twinkies, Cokes, ice cream, whatever.
"And I think she's fine without a friend. She's a pretty solo pony."
"Yeah, and if you eat to much of that I am not spending the night tonight. Or the rest of the week." It might be the staple of fair foods but Cassie wasn't their biggest fan, mainly because she'd seen what they could do to teenage super heroes over indulge. It was never pretty.
"But if you insist, lets go do the Go Karts before you won't fit in one anymore. And I think it's a shame. I bet she and that pony with the apples on it's butt would get on real well."
"Maybe I'll just go ahead and avoid the fried foods," Sam said. He had gotten really used to having Cassie spend the night every few days. That wasn't something he would give up even for fried food.
"Well maybe after the Karts I'll go and win it for you, how's that?"
"If you say so." Cassie said with a pleased grin as she kissed his cheek as a reward.
Then she laughed. "Key word being after. Come on, I have the sudden need for speed!" She grabbed his arm and started tugging towards the track, wanting to have some fun before it all disappeared again.
