So, maybe he should’ve known ahead of time, but trying to convince Kurt to come to the club? Was a big mistake. And kind of weird, when he thought about it. When he’d made the offer, it hadn’t occurred to him that he was opening that night, and that his job was to get naked in front of people, on a stage. And it was the look on Kurt’s face that got ( Read more... )

Now this was a good way to end the day. Helena had gotten the camouflage thing under control - mostly - enough, at least, to use it to go hunting earlier. She'd brought in a good haul, even better than usual. So now she was rewarding herself. She hadn't actually been to the strip club before, and damn but she'd been missing out. Men and women both - hell yes.

And okay, she felt a twinge of guilt wondering what Q would think. But come on. A strip club in a different dimension so didn't count as cheating.

Smiling to herself, she leaned back in her chair, concentrating just enough to make sure she didn't start blending in with it again, and waited for the next act to start.

As the club's owner, Saffron generally made a point to know everyone who stepped across her threshold, part to make them feel welcome and make sure they had a good time, and part to keep track of all the folks who came and went. She'd never had all that much trouble, with an exception or two, but it didn't hurt to be careful. Boyd had brought that lesson home.

"Hi there," she said with a friendly smile as she stopped next to the woman's table. "I'm Helen. How are you liking your evening at my humble establishment?"

"It's great," Helena said, smiling broadly. "You have a hell of a place here." Helen wasn't quite what Helena had come to expect from owners of places like this - just one more example of how the island wasn't Gotham. This time, it was a good thing. She offered her hand to the woman. "I'm Helena."

"Nice to meet you, Helena," Saffron replied, shaking the offered hand. "And thank you. It still strikes me funny sometimes, how our little club manages to be a success on a mysterious island with no economy, but this place is my baby, and I love it."

“Please,” Helena laughed. “Free skin and alcohol? Set up that kind of shop anywhere and you'd have more patrons than you could handle.” On the other hand, the point of most businesses other places was to make money, so that wouldn't work. It was a little surprising to here that Helen loved the place, but hey. To each their own. And it was a great place.

Helena cocked her head, thoughtful. “Any of the people here ever give you any trouble?” The island might not have much crime, but there were still jerks and scumbags. And it was amazing how many people turned into jerks and scumbags with enough alcohol in their systems.

"Good point, sugar," Saffron agreed with a light laugh. Near naked folks and booze were always certain to draw a crowd, even on a place like Tabula Rasa. It was part of the human condition, she supposed. Hell, wasn't like she was complaining. The more patrons, the better.

She gave a considering look at Helena's next question. "Not terrible often," she replied, "or at least it's not often something serious enough to make a fuss about happens. I've got good bouncers, though I could stand to have a few more. One of the bad things about folks disappearing-" one of the many, many bad things about it- "is it makes it hard for me to keep a full staff here."

At Helen's comment, Helena's smile widened. “If you're hiring, where do I sign up?” It had been way too long since she'd gotten to crack skulls. Even if this place was mostly calm, surely she'd get the chance once in a while.

Besides, then she'd be able to come here without that twinge of guilt. If Q ever found out, well, he couldn't argue if it was a job, right?

"I am absolutely hiring," Saffron said, her expression brightening into a wide, pleased smile. "You just need to let me know whether you want to work upstairs or down and which shift you want. The two shifts are Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday."

“What, you don't even need references?” Easiest job application ever! “Upstairs would be great,” she told Helen. “Whenever you need me more - I don't have much of a schedule to work around.” Or any kind of schedule, really.

"If you think you can do the job, that's all I need," replied Saffron. There hadn't been anyone so far who hadn't been cut out for whatever job they'd wanted. "Oh, great, in that case, I could really use another person on the Monday-Wednesday-Friday shift. You can start as soon as Monday, if you've the notion."

"Works for me," Helena agreed, a little laugh bubbling up under the words. "Can't promise I won't disappear on you, but til then you've got me. And I can definitely do the job."

This was excellent. A place to work, and the boss seemed pretty easy-going. She could live with this.
