From behind her hiding spot among the chairs, Penny stared in shock at what was happening. Captain Hammer was actually going to shoot Billy. Despite everything that had happened during the speech, she had still thought he was generally a good person, just sort of a jerk. But no, instead of holding Billy for arrest, Captain Hammer was standing over ( Read more... )

It took a split second for Aidan to realize just what he was seeing on the beach. It looked liked someone badly injured, which was so odd for the island that it took him a moment to process that's what it really was.

"Hang on," Aidan said, rushing over to where she was and kneeling on the sand to look over her injuries. "You're going to be okay. Can you tell me what happened?"

Penny slowly looked over at him, wincing slightly as she turned her head. It took her a moment to process what he'd asked her, her eyes dull as she stared at him. "I don't know," she said finally, her voice soft and sounding a little confused. "I think...I think there was a shot? An explosion..." She trailed off, furrowing her eyebrows as she tried to piece it together.

"Alright, we need to put pressure on this to keep you from losing too much blood," he told her, already pulling off his shirt to press over the wound.

The wound had definitely pierced her lunch and it was likely filling up with blood. If he didn't get her to the clinic fast so that it could be drained, she was definitely going to die.

"There's a clinic not far from here, I'm going to carry you there but I need your help. I need you to press this to your wound and try and keep the shrapnel from moving. Can you do that for me?"

"Um..." She furrowed her brow again, glancing down at the jacket he'd placed on her, and nodded slightly. She managed to wrap her arms around herself with some effort, and held it against herself the best she could. Once she had it, she looked back up at him silently, waiting for his approval.

"Good, that's perfect," Aidan said, shifting his arms under her as carefully as possible. He would have to be especially careful not to cause anymore damage while he carried her, but leaving her here was a death sentence.

"I'm Aidan, by the way. I'm a nurse here on the island. What's your name?"

"Penny," she said quietly. The pain was hitting her more now, and it was becoming a struggle to breath, much less talk. She tried to stay focused on what was happening, on holding the jacket to herself and not closing her eyes, but her mind was quickly becoming fuzzier, making it difficult. Her eyes drifted closed for a moment, just for her to snap them back open a second later.

"Hey, hey, hey, stay with me," Aidan encouraged as he carried her toward the nearest clinic. He needed her to stay awake and fighting, if she passed out it would be all too easy for her not to wake up again.

"We're almost there. We've got some amazing surgeons and they're going to fix you right up, okay?"

Aidan was determined not to lose this girl. He wasn't sure if saving someone could ever make up for taking a life, but Aidan was not going to let someone die if he could prevent it. He'd seen enough of that for all the lifetimes he had lived.

Penny nodded a little, keeping her eyes on Aidan as he carried her. It was easier to stay awake if she focused on him, kept herself trying to think about what he was saying. She had been weirdly okay with it when she thought she was going to die, but now that he was convinced she was going to live, she realized she really wanted him to be right.

"Alright, we're almost there," he said, glad her eyes were at least tracking with him. If she hadn't gone into shock or passed out, she stood a much better chance.

"Do you know what blood type you have? You're going to need a transfusion."

"AB," she said softly, after taking a moment to try and remember. She was glad they were almost there, her hands were shaking hard and she was having a harder time focusing than ever. "How far?"

"We're right there," Aidan said, backing into the doors of the clinic as he pushed himself through. Not a moment too soon, as he wasn't sure how much longer Penny would be able to last.

"I need a surgeon! Two chest wounds, probably a hemothorax! Need a transfusion of AB blood!"

Meredith looked up from where she'd been going over clinic papers, and was on her feet. "Get her over to the bed," she said, gesturing to one of the numerous empty patient beds in the room as she hurried through their supplies to gather what she needed. It was rare they saw any serious emergencies here, and she would have liked to have the reliable sterility of the O.R., but by the look of the girl Aidan was carrying, she didn't want to risk taking the extra time. "We're gonna need to do a chest tube and stop the bleed."

Aidan had made it to the clinic just in time, as Penny's ability to keep herself going without any sort of intervention was almost gone. Her hold on the jacket had gone slack, and just she stared between the two of them silently, her expression blank.

Aidan carefully set Penny on the bed, relieved that it was one of the doctors that was here. He would have risked trying the chest tube or something similar himself if he had to, but having the experience of someone like Dr. Grey was a relief.

"Just tell me what you want me to do," he said, moving his hands to put pressure back on the wound since he saw Penny's hands go slack. There was still consciousness in her eyes though, so he didn't panic too badly.

Meredith took in the wounds, the pieces of shrapnel protruding from the girl's chest. If she proved lucky, they'd missed anything serious, but there was a good chance she'd punctured a lung. "Staunch the bleeding," she said, pulling on her gloves, "as best you can, but keep those in. Give her morphine." They would need to check for internal bleeding and puncture wounds, but for the moment, all she could do was set up the chest tube. It was times like these she desperately missed working in a big city hospital or even anywhere but here, where they would have everything they needed on hand.

As Aidan laid her down, Penny gave a ragged gasp. The shock had begun to wear off, and she was really beginning to feel her injuries. Her eyes began to tear up and she closed them tightly, her face crinkled in pain.
