"Ima throw it back!" said Matthew, crouching down to retrieve the nut, or whatever else came to hand. It didn't really matter whether or not it was the same thing. The important part was the throwing.

Wolf knows he's supposed to take care of Matthew and that means not letting him hurt himself, but he can't help but be excited about someone throwing something back at the monkey. Maybe that's never happened before and maybe that's exactly what the monkey needs.

"Yeah!" he agrees, climbing down from the tree carefully and dropping onto the boardwalk. "Throw it!"

Matthew throws as hard as he can, which results in the nut going about a foot past the three feet he can usually make it. It's nowhere near the monkey. He stomps his feet and throws his hands in the air anyway.

Wolf cheers, even though the monkey is still sitting on its branch, staring down at the two of them curiously. It's enough that Matthew has tried, even Wolfs know that.

"Good job!" he says as the monkey chitters and then disappears into the trees. "Now he's gone!"

"Where'd he go?" Matthew asked him, turning around in a whole circle to see if he could find the monkey. He didn't know the game was supposed to be over so fast.

"I think he ran away 'cause we were throwing stuff at him!" Wolf answers, then lifts Matthew up to sit on his shoulder so that his little head is almost right in the tree. "Can you see him?"

"Ummmmmmmmm," said Matthew, letting the word go on and on and on as he craned his neck and tried to see up into the trees. "There's something up there! It's moving all over!"

"Which way?" Wolf asks, sounding excited. He won't take Matthew too far, he knows Anne is probably close and won't want her little one to go very far, but they can track the monkey a little bit. "Point! I'll chase him!"

"That way!" said Matthew, pointing enthusiastically in one direction before hearing a new sound from the opposite side. "No, that way!"

Wolf laughs, turning one way and then the other, making sure to keep a good grip on Matthew as he chases the monkey. Maybe it isn't even the monkey anymore, but it doesn't matter, not when he's having so much fun.

"Do you see it?" he asks. "Are we close?"

"Uh huh!" says Matthew. He doesn't have any idea where the monkey is anymore, but he's sure they'll find something. It's Wolf! "Faster! Go faster!"

Wolf speeds up, making sure to duck down a little so Matthew's head won't hit any branches as they run. It's a little like carrying Jack horsey back, but Matthew's so much smaller.

"There's a chicken!" he says, pointing. It isn't a monkey, but it's fun, too.
