Kon had definitely had some epic fails in his life. There had been the thing with Knockout, obviously, and then the thing with Tana and that had worked out just wonderfully...sarcasm heavily meant. There were some island fails, too. Mostly it was the fail that had happened when the island had messed with him and then his reaction to that. Some ( Read more... )

He smells the fire before he's close enough to see it through the trees, heading out to the beach rather than inland, tonight. The morning naps had caught up with him today, knocked him out for twelve hours and he's just coming out of the cloudy, cramped feeling that comes with oversleeping. He'd stretched, gotten something to eat, and spent the lighter part of the evening idling over plans for the race course ( ... )

Kon really shouldn't have jumped. That's what Tim did. He snuck up on you when you least expected it and once...no. No, not once he'd been able to expect it. He'd always jumped. He glared up at Tim, but there was the slightest hint of a twitching around his lips. "I think you do that on purpose," he accused. "Actually, I know you do that on purpose."

He sucked in a breath and gestured at a spot by the fire. "Pull up some sand." He'd tossed the game already, but he still had the box and he offered it to Tim. "Want the honors?"

"Habit," he says, mouth twitching in turn. It's an accusation he's used to, stopped apologizing for ages ago. He sneaks up on people, they don't like it, and he can't pretend he's going to stop any time soon.

You can't exactly toss years of training into a fire and call it done. Taking the box from Kon and examining it, he understands the burning plastic. "If this box could honor anything, I'd give it to Jason," he answers, flicking it into the flames, paper going first and curling from the plastic, yellow licked away by orange. "What is this supposed to accomplish?"

"An apology," Kon answered. He stared at the flames and shook his head. That wasn't right. He hadn't known that Tim would show up. Maybe he could have hoped, but he hadn't given Tim any reason to guess that he'd be here. "Maybe it's more realizing that I don't even know why you're upset. Not dismissing that you are," he said quickly. "Honestly not knowing the reason. I've missed so much with you. With Bart. Cissie and Cassie are the only two who haven't lived years beyond me."

Maybe it wasn't years, but in their world, months seemed like years sometimes.

"And maybe I haven't wanted to know. I want to pretend that everything's the same. But as recent events have proven, I can't. So I think I should hear if you want to tell. I don't want to feel like there's something between us. Namely everything I lived through and everything you lived through that neither of us know about."

Kon's head jerked around when he heard the shout and he stared as Zell came over and started pointing at the fire. He looked back, worried for a moment that there was something in there that had jumped in during the few moments when his attention had been distracted by Zell, but there were only the video games.

"Uhh, no?" He wasn't at all sure what Zell was talking about.

Zell, Kon thought, had gone crazy. Not that he wasn't a little eccentric at the best of times, but he had gone full-on crazy now. And the weird thing was that he didn't even know why. He just sat there, staring at Zell's antics, and hoped that either sanity would regain itself or at least an explanation would be coming. He just needed one or the other, really.

Savannah had gotten so used to being sleepy and sick that it took her almost a week to realize that she felt better. When she awoke and felt good. Not tired, not sick, not anything. It was wonderful. It had also taken almost a week to notice that things no longer fit. Her shirts were too tight on her chest and her jeans refused to button. She didn't think she looked any different, but denim didn't lie. She was getting wider and just generally bigger. That wouldn't do, but fortunately for her the clothing box was merciful and offered up a selection of lovely, shapeless sundresses that camouflaged her spreading hips and growing chest. The way the dresses flowed had the added benefit of concealing her belly. She wasn't really showing, but it had pooched out a little and it was hard ( ... )

It took Savannah's voice to break out of the semi-trance that Kon had found himself in while staring into the fire. "What am I what?" He frowned, looked back at the fire, and realization began creeping in. She was asking what he was doing. Right. He thought about lying to her, but it was Savannah and that wasn't really an option.

"Burning the video game that first turned things sour between me and Tim."

"Oh, my," she said softly, moving closer to him, and the flames by default.

"Are you doing all right with all that? You don't seem all right...can I do anything?" she asked. Even in the firelight the concern in her eyes was apparent.

"I'm..." Kon thought about it. "Doing better, I guess? I don't know. I'm trying to make a fresh start, I guess. I haven't talked to him since...well, since, but I'm getting to the point that I think I can without going absolutely crazy. I think." Don't know, think, guess. If he didn't sound sure, it was because he wasn't sure. He wanted to believe that he'd be okay talking to Tim again, but he had no idea whether it would be when it came right down to it.

After Cooper disappeared, and once she started going out in public for something other than class without having to be dragged, Alexis had gotten into the habit of taking long walks along the beach. It sounded like a cliche from a dating service profile, or a scene from a Jane Austen novel maybe, but she'd found them helpful, a way to think about things or just clear her head.

She was walking along, barefoot with her sandals clutched in one hand, and she could see the bonfire from a distance. It wasn't until she got up close that she saw who was standing by it. "If I'd known you were having a bonfire, I would've brought marshmallows," she said, though she could see this was no ordinary bonfire. He'd been burning something. "Hey, Kon."

"Hey, Alexis. The marshmallows would have been nice, but only if you brought chocolate and graham crackers, too." He decided that he wasn't going to tell Alexis about Tim or what he'd said. It wasn't like she needed to be bothered with it.

"How're you? Having a good night, I hope?"

"Mmmm, good point," Alexis agreed, nodding as she went to stand beside Kon. "Yeah, pretty good, just talking a walk on the beach. How about you? Everything okay?"

"More or less," Kon hedged. It wasn't really lying so much as not quite telling the whole truth. "I haven't been to a bonfire on the beach in forever, so I thought I'd make my own."

"I'm kinda amazed you haven't done that sooner." Cassie said from where she stood a few feet behind Kon. She'd been out walking Iris when she saw the light of the fire and came to investigate. When she saw Kon, she'd sent Iris to find Cissie, as he hadn't looked like he was in the mood to get growled at.

But she'd still held back, watching him burn game after game, waiting to speak until he was done.

Kon's head tilted a little when he heard Cassie and he didn't answer. What could he say? Maybe he didn't want to hear what she would have to say about what he'd done to Tim. Mostly because that would involve explaining what he had said about Tim and Dick. And what he had said to Tim.

He patted the spot next to him.

Cassie came over and sat down, close enough that she could lean into him as she sat with her legs hugged to her chest. She let the silence loom for a few more minutes as she watched the game slowly break apart.

"So, why now?"

He should have figured she'd see right through him. She always did. "I don't know. It was time, I guess? He kept bringing it up and...I don't know. It was time. Jason hates me because of it. I don't need Tim to hate me, too." Even if Kon was pretty sure Tim did hate him and for entirely different reasons.
