It isn't that Geoffrey actually needs to sew anything. Actually, he could probably go the rest of his life without sewing anything ever again, without so much as picking up a sewing needle. There are a dozen people on the island now with machines that could do this for him in five minutes flat. But fuck it, he's still going to sit here modifying a ( Read more... )

"What a devil hast thou to do with the time of the
day?" Kate murmurs, sliding in next to him and unsubtly checking out the play. "You're looking at a play, huh?"

"Looking at is probably the right way to put it," he admits. He's certainly not reading it at the moment. It would probably be more accurate to say he's contemplating it, while using it as decoration for his knee. "Maybe I'm meditating on it."

"Meditating is something," she points out. "Meditating is the first step in a very long process that ends with me getting to be in one of your plays."

"It's a hell of a decision," says Geoffrey. "Who knows who's interested in doing this kind of thing anymore, when we've got televisions in every home." Well, not quite, but he's sure it's only a matter of time now. "Who would you want? Which role?"

"A little limited for the girls," she points out. "Probably have to mess with genders again."

She gently kicks his ankle. "And of course people are interested. There's still a lot of here, Geoffrey."

"All of Shakespeare's a little limited for the girls," says Geoffrey, "as we have well discovered. But I'll happily put the lot of you in breeches again. It's practically tradition at this point."

"You can pretty much put me in whatever you want if it means you're directing me," she promises, grinning over. "I mean, that's a pretty good opportunity right there. Imagine the possibilities."

"Maybe I should direct you all in the Vagina Monologues," says Geoffrey. "Would that be offensive appropriation, or just really inappropriate?"

"It might be worth it if you make Duck come to all the rehearsals," she decides. "How're you doing today, Geoffrey? Aside from the meditating and the sewing."

Geoffrey would prefer not to traumatize his husband quite that much, but the idea of producing something a little more female-centric, considering who is in his core company, isn't a bad one. Even if Shakespeare is his heart.

"I am as I always am," he says. "Nothing special to report."

"You should consider making these in miniature," Kate says, carefully picking up what will soon be the leg of the overalls. She can sew, but no one makes overalls quite like Geoffrey. "Sam's always asking for more. Wants to look just like Duck. I'm still working on the thespian part."

"If the clothing box offers me up some miniature parts, I'll consider it a sign," says Geoffrey. Hell, Sam's still small enough he could probably make them out of the scraps. Well, maybe not. Kids grow like weeds at that age. He'd say that someone else could probably do it better, but that's not really why Kate is asking. "He's still in that phase, huh?"

"You know, I think we might have to accept it's not just a phase," she snorts. "Considering he's been like this since birth. I just don't think I've produced another actor for your plays. Sorry about that."

"Nonsense," insists Geoffrey. "Once he's old enough to read and tell stories, he'll understand completely. Any child of yours and Jack's is inevitably bound for the stage."

"It's adorable that you still think that," she says, patting his knee. "Who knows. Maybe someday I'll have another kid and they'll pop out reading and reciting soliloquies. I can hand them over to you for safe keeping."

"He's young," says Geoffrey, "and he just hasn't gotten a taste for it yet. Wait till he starts playing dress-up. We all played dress-up."
