"Bobo! Bobo, slow down!" Coraline yelled loudly as she chased after the illusive Bobo. Jumping over a tree root, Coraline skidded onto the boardwalk and stumbled before running straight down the path towards the beach. Coraline shouted again, watching as the golden coloured Bobo sped towards the water at a quick pace. "No, no, no, no! Don't go in ( Read more... )

Danny watches with a bemused smirk on his lips, arms crossed over his torso as he watches the scene at hand. "Okay, so I'm thinking, I'm thinking maybe this whole family of puppies has some inner-ear damage," he drawls idly.

Bobo chased after the crab, barking away quite happily before the crab turned and decided to come after him. Yelping, Bobo turned and ran in the other direction quickly as Coraline sighed and held out her arms for the puppy.

"Wuss puss," Coraline said picking him up as he looked sadly at her and then began to lick her face. Coraline turned and looked at Danny smiling at him. "What do you mean? He's brilliant, aren't you Bobo?"

"Yeah, well, Zulu's not bright," Danny drawls, a smirk on his lips. "I mean, the dog's kind of an idiot, but then, I guess he's just taking after Steve." He smiles brightly at Coraline, proud of the fact that his gift is making her happy. "How's he been otherwise? You take him to the vet, yet?"

"Maybe you just think he's an idiot, maybe it's all a cunning plan to take over the island." Coraline said knowingly. Coraline scratched Bobo's head as he licked her face. Bobo wasn't as bright as Cat but Cat was well, Cat. "He's okay. He hasn't chewed anyone's shoes yet but he did have one of my best pair of wellies. Didn't you?"

Coraline made a face but still smiled. She couldn't be angry at him just like she couldn't be angry at the Other Father or the other dogs. They couldn't disobey the way they'd been made. "I'm going to take him to see Miss Helen and then he'll be cool."

"If the dog has a cunning plan to take over the island, I'm handing in my badge. I can seek out perps like it's in my blood. Hell, it practically is. Williams-men are very devoted to service. Unless you're my piece of crackers younger brother who's all Wall Street."

Danny eyes the dog warily. "We oughta talk about the conditions of our deal a little more, I think."

"Wall Street is maths, right?" Coraline asked curiously. There was a whole world out there that Coraline didn't know about, references that people made on the island that she had no clue about. She'd grown up on the island, she didn't know about the rest of the world. That wasn't her home now. "How many brothers do you have?"

Coraline looked up at Danny sharply. Coraling knew when a but was coming. You can have this Coraline but you have to do chores. You can go rock climbing but only if you wear a million safety harnesses. You can go hang gliding but only when you're sixteen.

"What sort of conditions?" Coraline said, sticking her bottom lip out a little.

"Just the one, but I got three sisters back home, too," he says with an idle shrug, like he doesn't miss the crap out of his family. He's used to missing them, though, has been since the going-away party they gave him over a year ago. "And the conditions mostly involve the fact that once a week, you'd have to check in. And you'd need to move somewhere close to people. That's all."

"I always wanted siblings," Coraline said quietly, trying not to feel the low ache that she always felt when she thought about Harry. Bobo licked Coraline's face making her smile. "How close is close? Like my hut is close to people. And who do I have to check in with?"

"Close as in, if you made a noise in the middle of the night when some scary bad person comes in to murder you, you would be helped," he says, reasoning it out. "And you'd have to check in with an adult of your choosing."

"That's really close," Coraline said frowning. Coraline had neighbours but they weren't that close. Coraline kind of liked being in the middle of nowhere and having lots of space to garden and expand. Plus the Mirror Room was nearby just in case she needed to check it. "What if I got a walky talky or got a loud speaker so if I was in trouble people could hear it and come and help. Could I check in with you? I could check in with Bill too."

Danny hesitates for just a second because god knows he doesn't want Coraline interrupting him and Steve in the middle of the night. Not with the habits they've picked up. "Maybe you should check in with Bill," he says, a little uneasy. "I don't know that the person I'm seeing is on board with me taking on check-in duties."

"Okay," Coraline said. Coraline's ears pricked up at the last sentence and she looked at him curiously. "You're seeing someone? Who? Are they nice? Is it a girl? Is it a boy? What are they like?"

"Not up for discussion," Danny says swiftly. "Okay? The only reason I mentioned it is because it's gonna prevent you from checking in with me since that kind of thing encroaches on privacy."

Coraline made a soft oh, pulling Bobo into her chest. Coraline kept forgetting he wasn't Cain or Adam. Danny was just some guy, just some guy who was her friend. He didn't love her, he certainly didn't want her- no one did. She was just a kid that no one wanted.

"Oh, okay. I get it," Coraline said quietly. Coraline put Bobo down before picking up a stick and throwing it for him. "That's cool. Privacy." Coraline paused before curling her fingers around the key she always wore. She was strong. She was brave. "I'm still moving into my old hut though. Not up for discussion."

Danny sighs and gives Coraline a doubtful look. "Are you serious? Are you actually pulling this passive bullcrap on me? I am a detective, I am good at deducing," he sharply says. "And you are getting all passive and weird. Look, I just don't want you coming in the middle of the night when you need something and hearing things that'll scar you for life. You think I could live with that?"

"What's passive, that's a swear word Danny and I'm not repeating it, mean? I'm not passive or weird," Coraline said folding her arms across her chest defensively. Coraline would never be a good liar, her body and face were too suggestive of what she tried to hide. "What sort of things?"
