New Atlantis - gathering post

Sep 11, 2010 20:39

When the storm continued to worsen and it was apparent this storm was much more than a typical storm, the ITF went to work trying to warn people of what was coming and help them find a place to shelter in. New Atlantis was one of those places, since there was a ZPM powered shield--but Sam didn't want to turn it on until the last minute, so that as ( Read more... )

Jack could kick himself for not finding Eli and Claudia before the weather got rough and the only thing he could hope for was that they found a cave out there and were doing okay until the storm passed. He didn't have a lot of experience with hurricanes, being from the Midwest, but he knew enough about all sorts of adverse weather situations to know how to rough it.

Cash had been pretty laid back about the weather and Socks seemed to be snoozing it off on his and Sam's bed but Thor was into everything.

"Watch the puppy. He's too klutzy for his own good."

"Yeah, I see that," Sam said, watching the wolf pup topple over while wrestling with a stick. "I um... I guess you haven't had any sign of Eli and Claudia?" Of course he hadn't, because if he had, Sam would know about it, but she couldn't help but ask.

Jack shook his head. "Best I can hope for, Eli got the idea in his head to hole up in a cave. Debris is gonna be the biggest issue, so they need out of the wind. He's been off-world before, so I assume they went over that."

"I don't know." Sam was a little doubtful. "I mean, he's been offworld, but I think people on the Destiny didn't exactly get your standard SG team training. They sort of got... thrown together." And Eli, sweet as he was, didn't really seem the... survival type. "I just hope he's okay."

Alexis was worried.

She had been with Detective Beckett when they'd been herded into New Atlantis, which apparently had a shield that would protect its residents from what Alexis had heard was turning quickly into a hurricane. The two of them were there now, but Alexis was worried, and she knew the detective was too, because they hadn't been able to find Castle.

She paced, up and down, several feet in one direction and then back the other way, worrying. She hoped her dad was okay, wherever he was, and she hoped with all her might that Cooper had just stayed in the Compound at the sight of bad weather.

Beckett's expression wasn't nearly as obviously worried as Alexis's was, and despite the urge to pace herself, she willed herself to stay still, arms tightly crossed over her front as she silently gnawed at the inside of her cheek.

Inside, she was just as concerned as the younger woman. When news had reached them about the worsening hurricane, they'd instantly found each other, but for some reason, Castle was still nowhere to be found.

"I'm sure he's fine," she suddenly said, offering what she hoped was a convincing enough smile of reassurance to Alexis.

She nodded, still pacing back and forth. "I'm sure he is," she agreed, as much to convince herself as anything else. He was going to be fine, as long as he didn't decide he needed some first-hand experience on what a hurricane was like for a future book. Cooper, well, Alexis was just going to remain convinced he was safe in the Compound. She was already worried enough about her dad.

Alexis didn't know how Detective Beckett looked so calm; practice, she guessed, through her job, but whatever it was it was at least succeeding in bolstering Alexis' confidence that everything was going to be fine. She stopped her pacing abruptly, halting right in front of the detective. "I think I'm about to start wearing a rut into the ground," she said with a wry smile.

She could be calm. She could be unaffected. It was a little easier said than done, however, when it involved the people she cared about - and when her ability to do something in the way of fixing the problem was severely limited.

"There are other places for him to seek out shelter," she promised Alexis, nodding slowly, almost as if to reassure herself of that fact. "I'm sure he's just made his way to one of them by now."

I had made dinner and then braved the storm to get home. It was terrible but I felt I was safer with those from Stargate that I was with the rag tag bunch in the compound. We were both drenched when we got there but a little bit of toweling off and William and I were as good as new. By the time the shield was up, we were eager to go outside and see what was happening and who was around.

Jack had been making his rounds just to make sure New Atlantis was secure and most of the people were settled, as settled as could be in weather like this. He nodded at Vala and William, drawing a little closer for more than just the cursory conversation.

"You guys doing okay?"

"Just fine, thank you," I said with a smile. William strained to get out of my arms and latch on to Jack. "You'd better take him, he will just start screaming if you don't."

"What can I say, kids love me?" Jack said, extending his arms to take William. "Has he been okay? I know this kind of weather can scare the pants off anyone from two to ninety-two, but..."

Felicity only braved the weather because she wasn't sure if the roofs on the homestead would hold, and Jack did say something about New Atlantis having better construction. She wasn't taking any chances this time either. The last time there was constant rain, she found herself in a jungle: this time, she had brought along her camping gear, extra clothes and sword (wrapped in fabric).

She had made it New Atlantis just as the winds were really starting to pick up, and she let out a loud sigh of relief when she heard the sound of the shield go up behind her: she had made it. Navigating through the jungle in the rain was one thing, navigating in the rain and the wind was something else all together.

Now she just had to find someplace to dry off.

Guy wasn't actually planning to stay in. When the rain started pouring and word came about that this was no ordinary little storm (was there such a thing as an ordinary little storm on a tropical island?), Guy had all intentions to leave.

Perhaps he had left a window open, perhaps the bed-sheets were still hanging outside the hut. Whatever the excuse, there were certainly better places to be caught in when a storm was coming.

He was therefore leaving. Granted, the rain was pouring harder than he thought and the storm had caught up more quickly than he would have assumed and he probably should be thankful, but Guy Burgess chose to be annoyed when he heard the shield was up.

Daniel couldn't help but stare up at the shield. Ancient technology. He felt another of those little pangs of wistfulness at being here instead of out up there somewhere. He was so busy staring up that he didn't realize Guy was there until he'd bumped into him. "Oh. Hey. Didn't make it out in time?"

"If that shield is supposed to be so bloody advanced, they could have at least designed it to let people walk in and out," Guy remarked, annoyed. "Now, I'm stuck here for... fuck knows how long."

"Better in here than out there in that mess," Daniel pointed out. "Unless you really wanted to be blown away to who knows where." Of course, knowing Guy, he would have risked it for something. Not someone. Something.
