"Why?" Matthew asked again, though honestly Logan wasn't sure what he was asking about now. He'd put on the movie hoping that The Lion King would be enough to calm the kid down and earn him some peace- but apparently Matthew wasn't having it today. He had questions, and Uncle Logan was going to answer them all whether he knew the answers or not.

In the future he needed to remind himself that spoiling the kid from a distance was so much easier than taking care of him while Anne taught her class. ...Maybe he should have made Jack come. Jack was good with kids.

"Uncle Logan!" Matthew whined, prodding Logan's arm when the man didn't answer his question.

"Huh? What?" Logan asked, looking at the screen and then the child.

"Why's Simba leaving?" Matthew asked again.

"Oh, uh, 'cause his nasty Uncle told him it's his fault his dad's dead," Logan explained.

Matthew considered that for a long moment, frowning in disapproval before returning his attention to the film reel being projected onto the wall. "That's not nice," he decided, eating the apple cubes Logan had cut for him. Still, the movie only held his attention for the briefest of moments, and it wasn't long before he started to chat again. "Do you have a dad?" Matthew asked.

"I have Joe," Logan replied, offering the kid a smile. "You know that. He's your Joe too."

Matthew smiled and nodded. "Does Jack have a dad?" he asked.

"Uh- he did," Logan said, not sure if he liked where the conversation was going, and looking relieved when Matthew grew distracted by the dancing animals on screen.

The questions stopped and Logan put his feet up, closing his eyes as the movie played on. When he opened them again Matthew was climbing up him, covered in apple juice and mango. "Dirty hands," he announced, showing them to Logan. The young man laughed, giving up on getting any rest as he scooped the kid up and walked him into the kitchen. "Bet you don't eat like that when mom's around," he said, perching the kid on the counter as he ran the taps. "Wait here, I'm getting a towel. No jumping off the counter or into the sink," he said firmly, waiting for Matthew to nod his agreement before turning to grab a dishcloth and a small hand towel. When he turned back he was greeted by a face full of water and Matthew's joyful squeals. "You're clean!" Matthew announced, as Logan started to dry his face.

(Slow time and late tags very welcome.)
