To say that Chuck had been having a hard time lately would be a severe understatement.
Ellie was gone. Devon was gone. Madeline was gone, and there was a good chance that she'd never even exist again. Sure, Ellie and Devon would probably end up getting married back home, but that was no guarantee that he'd ever see Madeline again.
Bottom line: it sucked. A lot. And to top it all off, Chuck couldn't help but blame himself for it, even if it didn't make any sense at all. Maybe he hadn't been spending as much time with his family lately. Maybe he shouldn't have been taking as many classes as he was. Either way, Chuck couldn't help but feel as if it was all just his family abandoning him all over again, even if Ellie and Devon hadn't had any say in it at all.
After deciding again to put off going through his family's things-- he hadn't been able to go back into Ellie and Devon's hut since realizing they were gone, actually-- Chuck found himself in the compound. Someone had made pie in the kitchen that day, and instead of just taking a piece for himself, he'd grabbed the whole thing, a fork and was sitting in the rec room, playing what was probably his fiftieth game of Call of Duty since his sister had gone.
