he's going the distance, he's going for speed

"Sam!"

She knew this day would come, but it seems too early. He's still so little and she should have more time to prepare, mentally and strategically. It shouldn't be this way. She's supposed to have more time.

There's just no way Sam should be able to unclip his leash already.

It's like every bad made for TV movie Kate's ever seen. She only left him ( Read more... )

Rollo didn't walk on a leash, but Evey did tend to take him for walks every day, if only to make sure he didn't decide to be highly mischevous and begin chasing cats again. Today they were walking near the small waterfall so Rollo could splash in the water if he liked.

"You really are an overgrown puppy," she told him affectionately, then stopped short as he dashed off into the undergrowth barking. Generally that meant he'd spotted a cat, so she followed him, only to find nothing resembling a cat.

"Sam Crew, where is your mother?" she asked the little boy, who was currently giggling as Rollo sniffed him.

Kate's throat is almost raw from screaming her head off. The worst idea she can come up with is that he's gone to the waterfall so her feet turn at take her that way.

She can deal with anything but that.

"Sam!" she yells, feet pounding along the path.

Rollo perked up at the faint voice, which caused Evey to do so as well. If Rollo heard something, he generally meant it.

"Kate! We're over here," she called back as loud as she possibly could. "He's safe!!"

A familiar voice and safe is all she needs to hear. She sprints up the path and into the jungle, coming to a dead stop when she sees them.

"God, was he in here?" she asks with a horrified moan.

"No, no," Evey hastened to assure Kate. "He wasn't in the water. He wasn't even really near the water. And he's quite alright, see?"

Sam and Rollo had decided they were, apparently, the best of friends.

"But was he in the trees? Where there are animals?" she boggles, snatching Sam up to see that he's alright up close. Sam takes a good look at his mom and starts crying, wanting to be put back down with the puppy.

Sam was quite fine, as far as Evey could tell, but she didn't blame Kate for being so worried. Misplacing one's child in the Tesco was one thing, but misplacing him on an island was quite something different.

"He was actually right about here, sort of at the border between the clearing and the brush," she replied. "And he was staring at a rock."

Sam continues to verge on a tantrum before Kate finally swats at his arm, effectively shutting him up. She doesn't have to discipline Sam very often, thank God, but it gets his attention.

"Sam, you know you don't go places by yourself," she says tightly. "That was no. Big no. What if Evey hadn't found you, huh?"

Watching a disciplinary moment between parent and child was always rather awkward since Evey neither wanted to intrude nor seem as though she were gawking. She settled for crouching down to pet Rollo and ruffle his fur so he would know he hadn't done anything wrong. In fact, he'd done everything right.

"That was very good of you to find Sam," she told him quietly. "Good boy, very good boy. I'll get you a treat when we get home."

"Do you want to trade?" Kate grits out, dropping a kiss to Sam's head as he starts to cry. "This one isn't well behaved but he can talk. It's pretty entertaining at least."

Evey chuckled lightly, though she wasn't laughing at Kate, she really wasn't. It was an odd situation, though.

"No, that's alright," she demurred. "Though if this occurs again, please do let me know. Rollo likes tracking things, especially important things."
