She knew this day would come, but it seems too early. He's still so little and she should have more time to prepare, mentally and strategically. It shouldn't be this way. She's supposed to have more time.
There's just no way Sam should be able to unclip his leash already.

"You really are an overgrown puppy," she told him affectionately, then stopped short as he dashed off into the undergrowth barking. Generally that meant he'd spotted a cat, so she followed him, only to find nothing resembling a cat.
"Sam Crew, where is your mother?" she asked the little boy, who was currently giggling as Rollo sniffed him.

"Sam!" she yells, feet pounding along the path.

"Kate! We're over here," she called back as loud as she possibly could. "He's safe!!"

"God, was he in here?" she asks with a horrified moan.

Sam and Rollo had decided they were, apparently, the best of friends.

"He was actually right about here, sort of at the border between the clearing and the brush," she replied. "And he was staring at a rock."

"Sam, you know you don't go places by yourself," she says tightly. "That was no. Big no. What if Evey hadn't found you, huh?"

"That was very good of you to find Sam," she told him quietly. "Good boy, very good boy. I'll get you a treat when we get home."
