Though she wouldn't be taking any part in it, Karen enjoyed watching everyone else do the speed dating thing. It was nice seeing people connect, but even better seeing the mismatched dates. Not that she'd ever admit it out loud ( Read more... )

Speed dating had seemed like a good idea to sign up for at the time, but now that I was staring down the barrel of actually doing it, I had to wonder what the hell I'd been on when I'd agreed to it. I wasn't looking to start a relationship, and it wasn't as if I needed more men in my life in the general sense. Still, I'd committed to it, and there was nothing for it but to rally my dignity and jump into the singleton fray.

As Johnny took his seat, he couldn't help looking immensely pleased at having found himself opposite Shari. He gave her an almost adoring gaze, chin resting on his hand. "See, I knew we'd get another date."

"I doubt this one is going to turn out any better for you than the last," I replied with a dubious arch of my eyebrows. Not that Johnny wouldn't be fun to have a roll in the proverbial hay with, I'm sure, but I wasn't going to give him the boost to his ego.

Castiel sat down and froze mid-smile when he saw who it was.

"Oh, hi," he said, unsure whether he should be relieved or worried that it was someone he knew.

He looked so damned worried, like I might launch over the table and molest him or something.

"Don't worry, Cas, I don't want your bod," I reassured him, even though it wasn't strictly true. He had a pretty nice one.

Alistair was quickly realizing he didn't know many people at all here, the woman he was approaching included. How he'd been acting so far had gotten him this far, so he decided to just keep it up.

"Looks like you're stuck with me for the next fifteen minutes," he said with a teasing smile, sitting down across from her. "My name is Alistair. Nice to meet you."

"Shari, likewise," I replied, returning his smile. "Alistair is a pretty unusual name," I remarked, wondering if the guy was some kind of ex-angel or important historical hottie.

"I agree, actually. I unfortunately didn't have much say in it," he replied. He didn't actually know why he'd been named that. It came along with the not knowing his family part of his history. "I'm from Ferelden, also, which I know isn't a place you've ever heard of."

"Is this all making you as dizzy as it's making me?" Coop asked as he took a seat. All the dates and names and occupations were all just sort of beginning to bleed into one another at this point. He felt like maybe he would have benefited from writing some of this shit down, but he was pretty sure this speed dating stuff was supposed to be fun, and not like cramming for an exam. "I'm Coop."

It probably would have been better if he had opened with that.

"Hi."

I laughed. "Hey," I greeted with a sympathetic smile, and motioned to myself. "Shari, and no doubt. I feel like I'm on a merry-go-round. I don't know how you're supposed to tell whether someone is relationship material in fifteen minutes."

That song by The Police about the teacher being tempted by his student entered Henry's mind as he sat across from Shari, even though the term was over and while she was young, she definitely wasn't a teenager. She was too young for Henry anyway, but he figured a few minutes' conversation with someone he knew and liked would still be enjoyable.

"Hey, Shari," he greeted as he sat across from her. "I didn't expect to see you here. How's it going?"

"I didn't expect to see me here, either," I shot back with a smirk, and then shrugged. "I'm okay, I guess. Wondering how anyone is supposed to figure out whether somebody is date material in fifteen minutes. Any luck?"

"Supposedly it only takes a few seconds to form an opinion of someone," Henry pointed out. "Whether or not that opinion is likely to be accurate is up for debate."

He held up his hands in a 'who knows' gesture, then smiled. "They say you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but personally I think that's all a person's got time to look at in fifteen minutes. First chapter, if you're lucky. I haven't had any bad conversations, at least."

Felix found himself growing slowly more sure of himself as he went on, and despite being older than pretty much all of the other participants, he was actually having a good time of it.

"Hello, there," he said brightly as he extended a hand, recognizing the young woman from regular (read: constant) visits to the kitchen. "Felix Unger, yours for the next fifteen minutes."

I knew Felix in the way I knew a lot of people, mostly by repeated sightings but no real interaction apart from your average 'pass the salt' type stuff. And, well, because he was half of the Odd Couple.

"Shari Cooper," I replied, and gave his hand a firm shake. "You seem to be enjoying yourself."

"Right as rain!" Felix said, practically a chirp of enthusiasm. "I admit to having been a bit trepidatious at first, but I think I'm really getting into the swing of things," he went on, miming the swing of a baseball bat for emphasis.
