With classes over and so many important people disappearing on her all the time, Serena found herself missing New York more and more. At least at home, most of the people who mattered would have been there, and there was no shortage of distractions available. After nearly two years in this place, she longed to go home, and not just for a few imagined days. She missed her friends, she missed her old life, she missed her mom, and some days, it was too hard to ignore that for long.
That had never stopped her, though, from trying to make the best of her situation. If anything, it was all the more reason to try and find a reason to be happy here again. No matter how hard she hoped for home, she was stuck here for now, and she couldn't bear just to be miserable all the time. It was easier, better, to pretend everything away and enjoy the sunshine. If there was one thing she had going for her in this place, it was that she had even fewer responsibilities than she ever had back on the Upper East Side and fewer people watching when she screwed up even those.
Spending the afternoon out on the beach was nothing new for her, but it was one part of living here that she liked, at least, and she'd taken some magazines and a towel with the intention of just lounging. That had ended when she'd been too slow getting her magazines under cover when one of the island's brief, frequent rain showers caught her by surprise, and she found herself wandering in search of something else to do.
Eventually she wound up down by the volleyball net, tossing the ball high and slamming it hard towards the net, grinning even when it bounced off the top. Waving to someone passing by as she jogged a few feet to retrieve it, she called out, "Come and play! This has to be more fun with more people."
