Empires are not brought down by outside forces, they are destroyed by weaknesses from within.

Lionel stood at the window of the padded cell for a long time, watching his only son struggle in his own mind, his hands in his pockets. He stared at Lex's blank look and idly moving lips, unable to look away if only so the doctors and nurses around him wouldn't see the emotion in his eyes. A Luthor didn't show emotion to those undeserving, it was ( Read more... )

Scotty is dressed for a day on the beach, sporting bright pink sunglasses and a tamer pair of swim trunks; he even has a picnic basket in hand, and he's looking around for a spot to set his towel down when he notices someone who is decidedly not dressed for the beach. He sighs inwardly and very briefly considers ignoring him, leaving him for someone else to greet, but then that wouldn't be very nice at all.

He tosses his towel down and sets his basket next to it, walking up to the stranger with a hesitant smile.

"Hey there. You look a little lost."

Lionel, having taken a moment to compose himself, turned to look for the voice who had spoken and it was only his years of practice that allowed him not to react. Somehow, he was beginning to think this wasn't a delusion, because he couldn't fathom where in his mind this young man would come from.

"Yes, I think I am. Do you have any idea why I'm not currently in Kansas? I need to get back." He asked in a smooth voice, as his hands searched his pocket for his cellphone. If this man didn't have any answers, perhaps he could reach someone who did.

Oh dear. It definitely is one of those. He pulls a sympathetic face and looks away for a moment, briefly unable to look at this stranger in his ignorance, but he steels himself to what he has to say and glances back again, sheepish.

"I hate to tell you this, but... That phone won't work. And no one could really tell you why you're in Kansas, except whatever is controlling this island decided you should be here, and not there." He hesitates, frowning, before he adds, "And there's no going back, either."

Everything the man has said up until the last has irritated Lionel but he could deal with it. But as to not going back...Lionel replaced the phone in his pocket when he saw their was no signal, taking the moment to compose himself before he gave his full attention to the man. "What do you mean there is no going back? What is there to keep us here?"

Worry began to form in the back of his mind, but as always, Lionel just ignored it. He still had explore his options before worry was allowed to set in. Because he needed to get back, for Lex's sake. He wasn't about to trust his only heir to some crack pot doctor who could be paid to cause a young man to go insane.

"That I can't tell you," Scotty says, lifting his eyebrows and shaking his head. "No one can. Whatever brought you here, it sends you home when its ready, and there's no way to catch an earlier flight." This guy has a cell phone and he looks... businessy, so maybe that's a good way to reach him.

He makes an apologetic face, frowning softly. "You want to go sit somewhere? I know this is a lot to take in."

Lionel took a moment to consider all this. So, he was basically stuck here until some unknown force decided it was his time to go back. If there was anything Lionel Luthor hated was leaving his fate up to others, but at the moment it seemed like it was a bitter pill he'd have to accept.

"No, I'm alright." Lionel said in reply to the offer to sit. "Though I have to ask, despite the barren landscape, you don't seem to be living off nature. Is there civilization here?" That was something at least. He wouldn't have to experience what Lex had that had caused his second psychotic break.

Scotty is happy to answer a question that at least can be answered in the affirmative. "Oh, yeah. There are a ton of people here, actually. Just that way's the Compound, with the kitchen and a neverending free clothes box. There's a strip club-nightclub-bar place and a restaurant -- plenty of civilization. I hear they're working on plumbing."

He realizes too late that he sounds a little like a hick from Backwater, Mississippi, but the bit about the plumbing slips out before he can stop it.

Even Lionel had to admit he was impressed. Though the idea of a strip club-nightclub-bar in a budding civilization made him smirk. "That's quite impressive. It seems you all have built yourself your own resort."

Scotty laughs, settling his hands on his hips. "Just about, and we'd probably have one of those by now if the whole place wasn't basically one giant forced vacation. You can find a place to stay in the compound until you get used to everything here, and then if you wanted, you could have a hut built or move into an empty one."

A hut. How drool. But, if that's what he had to do...he'd make do, but in a Luthor fashion of course. "Can you show me this Compound? You have me extremely curious."

Well. There goes lunch. Scotty doesn't show his disappointment, though he feels it, and he nods. "Sure. Just one second."

He can't really tell the new guy to screw off, it's picnic time, so Scotty sucks up his frustration since it's for the greater good. At least he can try again later. He scoops up his basket and his towel and returns to the stranger.

"Okay, it's just up this way. By the way, I'm Scotty Wandell."

Lionel wasn't what one would call grateful, but he did appreciate Scotty's effort. Expected it really, but appreciation had it's uses. Like getting more information about this unfortunate situation he'd found himself in.

"Lionel Luthor. I do appreciate this Mr. Wandell."

"Please," he says, grinning, "call me Scotty. And it's no problem at all." Which is a lie, but it's a lie through a bright smile, which is the only appropriate kind of lie. "Everything you need to know about how to get settled here is in the Compound. There's a room there for you to crash for a couple of days, before you figure out where you want to stay. The clinic is there, and the laundry, and a rec room..."

He hesitates, thinking for a moment, then adds, "Well, the rec room is kind of crazy. It's like the island. The bookshelf and the jukebox have a mind of their own."
