Empires are not brought down by outside forces, they are destroyed by weaknesses from within.

Lionel stood at the window of the padded cell for a long time, watching his only son struggle in his own mind, his hands in his pockets. He stared at Lex's blank look and idly moving lips, unable to look away if only so the doctors and nurses around him wouldn't see the emotion in his eyes. A Luthor didn't show emotion to those undeserving, it was a lesson Lionel had been trying to teach Lex for years, and he wasn't about to start now.

He'd meant what he'd said to the doctor earlier. This was far from what he wanted. If Lex had only left well enough alone or even just listened to Lionel once in a while...So much could have been avoided, not just this. But no, he had to be stubborn, like his mother. Acting out, refusing to see sense, letting his weaker attributes guide him. Refusing to see that father knew best and was only trying to help Lex redeem himself for killing his little brother. An act Lionel had never forgiven him for. Yes, Lex was a disappointment in many ways, but he was still a Luthor, Lionel's son and only heir. And he wasn't going to lose another son, so this is what he had to do, for the both of them.

Lex had settled into the corner of his cell again and Lionel was composed enough now to turn away. Hands in the pockets of his overcoat, he turned with a quick click of his dress shoes on the linoleum floor and strode purposefully through the hallway of Belle Reve, towards the waiting limo. He'd call later to double check the dosing of Lex's drugs and their effects on his unique physiology. Despite the drama to get Lex here, it was worth the effort so they could more closely monitor the situation and get it over with quickly and with minimal fuss. And once he'd forgotten everything Lionel needed him to, it could all be easily blamed on Lex's recent lonely stay on a tropical island.

Lionel's mind was racing with all the details of the plan to the point that he barely noticed that when he stepped through the doors of Belle Reve, he'd stepped not into a dark Kansas night, but a sunny island morning. In fact, he didn't noticed the change until he realized his shoes were wet and looked down to see waves lapping at them. Blinking, it took a moment for his brain to change gears, then he was looking around frantically, trying to come up with some sort of explanation for this.

"No...No! This isn't possible..." Lionel said to himself as he stepped back out of the waves and put a hand to his temple. Lex was the one suffering from delusions...not him. But how else could this be explained? The doctor! She must have slipped him some of the drugs. But what good would that do her, since even crazy Lionel had the means to ruin her? But what other explanation was there?

[And so enters Lionel Luthor for his one and only post on the island. I remind people of this post before tagging him. Also, not too late to be involved in the later parts of plot, particularly the investigation. ST/LT welcome and it's a traditional debut]
