There was something satisfying in the change of the weather, Sarah found, as if it were some kind of proof she was right about this place. With the exception of Halloween, it had been quiet of late, at least for her, and she'd been so sure a change was coming; things never stayed that peaceful for long, not on the island or off it. As potential ( Read more... )

Natalya was dressed in special ops white from head to toe. The material was cheap, and the back panel of the jacket had a ridiculously hideous pale grey camouflage pattern, but the hood was furred and the fit was perfect, and the pants tucked easily into the boots she'd arrived in and worn almost every day since. She hadn't been inside since the weather had switched, and she didn't plan on going in until it was too dark to see anything or breathe comfortably.

There was snow.

"Sarah, pryvet!" Natalya called, beaming and pushing her sunglasses up onto her forehead. "Zima na poslednem! This weather, it is being beautiful, no?"

Natalya was one person in particular Sarah felt a little uncomfortable lying to, if only because she felt foolish for having chosen to pretend not to speak Russian. But then, she figured, Natalya was likely suspicious enough of her as it was.

Smiling warmly, she pushed such thoughts aside, pleased to see Natalya so happy. "It really is," she said. "It's breathtaking, really. You look as if you've been enjoying it."

"Da," Natalya said, "more as yet than anything else I am finding here, this is bring... comforting. Perhaps not so much Disney castle," she added, looking up at the compound with a raised eyebrow.

Sarah laughed again, nodding, her hands curled up in her pockets for some extra measure of warmth though she didn't mind the cold at all. "That's exactly what it looks like," she agreed. "Of all the changes I noticed on the walk up here, it's certainly the most... absurd."

Lennox didn't really know Sarah all that well, but he knew that between being friends with Pam and how nice she'd seemed at the party when they'd met, she probably wouldn't kill him if he threw a snowball at her. Probably. And frankly, it was worth the risk.

He'd been working on it since leaving the Hamlet, collecting snow here and there, eventually working up enough to pack it into a loose ball. Spotting Sarah in front of the Compound, he paused, grinned and, without calling a warning, threw the snowball square at her back.

For all her training, Sarah could hardly be expected to hear a snowball coming. She knew only that she hard someone behind her, the very faint crunch of what snow there was under someone's feet, and then, as she started to turn, something cold smacked against her back and she was startled into laughing when she realized what it was. Glancing uselessly back over her shoulder, she spun around to face her attacker, a grin frozen on her face.

"Oh, is that how it is?" she asked, hands in her pockets as she walked toward him. "A little more snow around and you'd have a real fight on your hands."

"That's how it is," Lennox agreed solemnly, looking around at the snow, fighting his grin. "And I know what you mean. It took me practically my whole walk from the Hamlet just to get one good snowball, man. When it really starts to fall, I guess I'm just gonna have to watch my back."

There were worse things in this world than getting into a snowball fight with a pretty girl. Far worse things. "But between you and me? I think I could take you in a snowball fight," he teased, although that probably wasn't true.

Sarah bit her lip, trying not to laugh, though amusement crossed her expression all the same. "I guess we'll see about that," she said, grinning. "But at least it's nice just having the cold back for a change. I never thought the day would come I'd actually get tired of sunshine." She'd spent long enough in Los Angeles before this that it hadn't been all that much of a change, humidity aside.

Peter really can't help his bemusement as he opens the front door of the Compound to make his daily walk. Really, he's used to slack-jawed wonder at certain things, but the Compound is not one. At least, not usually. "Brings to mind fairytale castles, doesn't it?"

Sarah glances from the candy-colored spirals to the man in the doorway and nods, smiling warmly. There's something about it that smacks of childhood, though it might border on the ridiculous, and an innocence she's not sure she ever had. "It does," she says, "like something out of an old cartoon. Sleeping Beauty maybe."

"Well, if there are any sleeping princesses inside to match the exterior, I've walked right on past." He pauses, affects a mild look of thought. "Though, I'm really not the right Prince Charming that the fairytale liked to talk about. Are you headed inside? Shall I move out of the way, perhaps?"

"Oh, don't worry about it," Sarah says, waving a hand. "I'm mostly just taking in all the changes. It seems like everything's completely different this morning." She quite likes that, actually. A change of pace is just what they need. She smiles. "I'm Sarah, by the way. Hi."

Dressed in a bright candy coloured sweater and matching trousers with the bright green coat she arrived in, Charlotte Charles stopped next to Sarah on her way to the Compound.

"I think it's pretty," she commented with a self-satisfactory nod. In fact it looked good enough to eat if those sorts of things were advisable. They were not. "Don't you think it's pretty?"

"It's... very pretty," Sarah said, nodding. "Just unexpected. I'm accustomed to this place looking more like a prison than a fairy tale." She was hardly surprised Chuck thought so. She seemed the kind to see the silver lining in everything. It was strangely refreshing.

"True, but I think I like this one better," Chuck declared having decided this at the very moment she saw the Disney-like creation that had taken the place of the compound. Now if only the kitchen hadn't been made too rustic everything would be fine.

"Less doom and gloom."

"Yes," Sarah agreed, ducking her head with a laugh. "And I'd say we could certainly use less of those. Maybe it'll be a nice winter, if this is anything to go by." She wouldn't have minded a little excitement, but all things considered, if this was the worse they had to deal with, she'd be content. Last year, she'd had to ward off some kind of Yeti and she wasn't keen to repeat the performance.

Having already experienced one December on the island and heard about the others, Pam couldn't say she was particularly surprised by the return of snow. Though she hardly missed the weather in Scranton, this was one change that she, too, enjoyed; it wouldn't have felt like Christmas without at least the cold, and as much as she enjoyed the usual tropical climate, having something different for a while was undeniably appealing, too.

She'd managed to get as bundled up as she could in what was left in the hut from the previous December, and had intended just to take a look around, the decorations being fairly hard to miss already. She hadn't gotten far from her hut, though, when she spotted Sarah in front of the Compound, and without a second thought headed over to join her. "It's nice, isn't it?" she asked, exhaling on a laugh, her breath a cloud in front of her. "Kind of cheesy this year, but nice."

"It's festive," Sarah settled on, laughing a little again. "Not at all what I was expecting, but you're right, it's nice. Were you headed inside?" She'd meant to go in herself, just to grab some breakfast, but the sight of the Compound had distracted her momentarily.

"Yeah, I think I am gonna head in," Pam said, nodding. It was cold, after all, and as much as she liked the weather, it was going to take some adjusting to again. "Get out of the cold for a while. God, it's almost weird to say that."

"I know," laughed Sarah, wrapping her arms around herself as she started forward. "Isn't it? I'm so used to the sunshine now." She'd always been quick to adapt, though, and it didn't really bother her. Ellie had been sure this would happen; it wasn't that much of a surprise. "I was just thinking I'd go get breakfast. Warm up a little."
