The Lion Sleeps Tonight

I am exhausted. I've spent the past two days, scouting this entire place out. Zell was right. I couldn't get the crystal to work at all, but it was worth trying. I do have a new idea, but I can't do it by myself. And it definitely requires more planning ( Read more... )

Riku hadn't expected to bump into Squall again so soon, but he guessed he shouldn't be surprised. Squall was new and probably wanted to explore as much of the island as possible. So finding Squall out in the woods while doing a little exploring of his own was almost to be expected really.

"Looks like cottages don't work here either. Sorry man," he said sympathetically. Squall looked even more tired and grumpier than the last time they'd met, so Riku made an effort to be civil. That and he knew Zell would have a fit if he got into a fight with Squall.

"...Yeah," I say, noting that he seems less cranky than the last time we met. I still pay close attention to his position. He's still wearing the blind fold so obviously he's still hiding things.

At least he didn't call me Leon.

"Too bad," I say, sadly, though my tone of voice is probably pretty monotone at this point. I'm not sure what else could disappoint me.

Squall was less disappointed than Riku had expected him to be. Not being able to use magic had been annoying for him and devastating for Zell. Either Squall was starting to accept the limitations placed on him by the island or he just didn't care that much. Riku wasn't sure which.

"Yeah it is. I was hoping maybe it would be different for you, but I guess not. None of Zell's items work either." Riku glanced at the cottage on the ground. It looked just like the ones from his world. Yet another weird coincidence.

"Any luck trying to find a way off the island?" Riku doubted that Squall had been any more successful than the rest of the island's inhabitants, but he felt it was worth asking. Sooner or later someone had to figure out a way to get home, right?

"I guess I miscalculated what was magic and what wasn't. I thought it was mechanical." I exhale slowly.

"No way off the island, but I suspect you figured as much." It's not accusatory, just factual. "I do have an idea though."

How Squall could possibly think that something that was small enough to fit in your backpack could expand to house several people and not be magical was beyond him. Riku chose not to point that out though. It would probably just annoy Squall and he wasn't in the mood to argue with him. So instead he chose to talk about the relatively safe topic of getting off the island.

"Well, since you're still here I figured you'd hadn't found a way to get home, no. Everybody's gotta try though, right?" He himself had spent several days trying to figure out how to open a Corridor before finally giving up.

"What idea is that?" Riku asked curiously. "Anything that might help us leave this place is worth trying."

I haven't run my plan past Zell yet and I really want to do that before I start sharing things with the guy who has things to hide.

"It's just an idea. I'll let you know if I think it has merit." I'd probably send Zell to fill him in honestly.

"Alright. If you decide it's worth trying let me know and maybe I can help you out." Riku looked down the inert cottage again. "In the meantime why don't you head back to the Compound and try and get some rest. You look like you could use it." Riku flashed Squall a small half-grin. In spite of Squall's grouchy nature Riku couldn't resist teasing him a bit.

"Already tried that. It lead me to here," I reply quietly, only a little defeated by the circular path my life has taken today.

"The Crash Room's too crowded, huh?" Riku was sympathetic. He remembered how hard it could be trying to sleep in there sometimes. He reached down and picked up the inert cottage, then handed it to Squall. "Here, stash this away for now and let see if we can't find you some proper camping equipment. If the Cottage won't work you'll just have to do it the old fashioned way I guess."
