If Wednesday didn't know better, she would've thought the island had sent her home for her island-versary. Actually, she didn't know better, and so when the graveyard appeared just behind her hut, full of mossy old graves and dead flowers and illuminated by the full moon, she made a very thorough investigation before determining that she hadn't, in ( Read more... )

Garak was not, so far, enjoying this "holiday." There were odd, mostly mythical human creatures inhabiting the island and he'd been asked at least ten times whether his attire was a costume. He'd also simply been informed that he had a "cool costume, dude" and hadn't much appreciated that either. That said, at least there were no mogrunds. He had no desire to be confronted with mythical Cardassian creatures, especially that one.

He was walking the back paths of the island when he suddenly found himself in a graveyard that he was quite certain had not been there. Wednesday seemed to be enjoying a picnic, which surprised him not at all, and also seemed pleased at the moldy hand emerging from a grave.

"Good evening, Wednesday," he greeted her, keeping an eye on the hand just in case.

"Good evening," said Wednesday, perfectly pleasantly, for her. As she watched the hand, she took small, careful bites of her sandwich. "I'm visiting family tonight."

"I can see that," he noted, still watching the hand, which didn't seem to be making a great deal of progress on its journey out of the ground. "And I also see that they are visiting you as well."

He really didn't understand the holiday and found the idea of departed members of his family (such as it was) reappearing to be more than a bit disconcerting.

"They've never visited me before," Wednesday noted. Not once in all her time on the island. "Today is special. Are you hungry?"

"I had noticed more than a few unique elements to the environs today. It is a holy-day, correct?" he replied, only partially feigning confusion, since he was truly more than slightly confused about the purpose of the celebrations.

"I have recently eaten, thank you," he demurred, since the prospect of dining near a moldy body was not particularly appetizing.

"The dead join us on this day," said Wednesday solemnly, though it wasn't always the case that they joined them quite so physically. "And we can communicate with them."

"The dead join you?" he repeated questioningly. "I'm afraid I'm not sure how that's possible. Once an individual is dead, I was under the impression that they were no longer capable of communicating."

The Cardassian disbelief in an afterlife did occasionally make understanding other cultures' beliefs about death slightly less than simple, but he wasn't quite as confused as he seemed to be.
