If Alain closed his eyes, it could almost be a fair day in Gilead. The sounds and smells were all the same. There was the sound children laughing, trotted around by Glue Boy,and Jolly, getting their faces painted, and themselves entirely covered in flowers by Ilse and some of the other girls. Boys participating in impromptu footraces with their pals, yelling as one sped off the mark early. Men who laughed and bet as their fellows took aim at the poor unfortunate volunteer, George Weasley he thought, about to be dealt some sticky tomato justice. And then there were the food smells, the pies most especially, which would not have to wait much longer for the contest that would see many of them quickly devoured under the watchful eye of the judge, Glen Bateman.
There were members of the Court there naturally. He saw Phedre as she passed him, the one most responsible for all of the grand decorating. But there were no costumes yet to identify any of them as the mysterious patrons of the party, and the stage stood empty while the fair grounds themselves teamed with people, young and old alike, participating or making their own fun under the summer sun. When the sun went down and the children went home, the energy of the place would change, but the carnival atmosphere of the day had people smiling, and laughing, and he thought that was just right.
