The problem, Cable thought, with living on an island where the only real danger was the local wildlife was that animals tend to attack entirely based on their own private whims and so don't follow any particular pattern. It was an inconvenient trait, in that not only did it make security a lot harder, it also meant that no matter how long Cable ( Read more... )

Peter had sprang up into the nearest tree as soon as the trap started going off but was still watching with big round eyes. There were traps and then there were very amazing traps that were so clever they impressed even him.

"That," he breathed as he looked up over at Cable. "was brilliant."

This was one of those latter traps.

Cable smiled in response to that. It was always nice to provoke enthusiasm.

"Thank you, Peter. I try my best."

When it was clear that no other boulders were going to come rushing out of the underbrush to crush him, Peter clambered back down to the ground.

"What are you going to use it for?"

"Oh, I'll think of something, I'm sure," he replied. "Now I know I can build one."

"Aren't traps not as fun as getting to track and chase and really fight, though?" Peter could admire the artistry it took to build traps, certainly he thought Wednesday's were masterful, but he had no talent for them. Too impatient and bold for any prolonged sneakiness.

"And why can't I do all those things as well?" Cable replied with a smirk.

"But if you do them both then you might get caught by your own trap and then get crushed under the boulders and get eaten by a boar or something," Peter pointed out, sensibly enough. The jungle was full of dangers enough as it was, between wild pigs and dinosaurs, even without falling victim to your own traps.

"Well, I meant at different times," Cable responded. "It's helpful to have more than one arrow in your quiver, Peter. To know more than one way of doing things."

Peter scratched at his nose but couldn't think up a very convincing argument against that. It would be better to have lots of arrows instead of just one.

"I don't know a lot of traps," he said after a moment. "Just the regular ones like nets in the grass and a rope that goes around your ankle."

"That's easily enough corrected," Cable replied. "If you want to learn."

It was a compliment to Cable and his impressive trap that Peter didn't hesitate before nodding, even though he'd had just a few days of freedom since school let out.

"Yeah, I do, if you could teach me. I'm a good learner, I can read already and everything."
