The problem, Cable thought, with living on an island where the only real danger was the local wildlife was that animals tend to attack entirely based on their own private whims and so don't follow any particular pattern. It was an inconvenient trait, in that not only did it make security a lot harder, it also meant that no matter how long Cable ( Read more... )

Logan was taking the long way home, as he often did, and though usually he walked right by anyone he didn't know, there were some things that couldn't be ignored. Tilting his head slightly to the side, he took in the man, and then his trap, before returning his attention to the man once more.

"Let me guess," he said slowly. "You're hunting wabbits?"

His lips curled slightly, and he was smirking as he stepped a little closer. "Maybe a roadrunner or two?"

"The coyote's the one in charge," Cable replied dryly as he picked up one of the boulders and moved it back towards the tree. "I just cash the checks."

Logan quirked a brow, having half expected a confused look and then to be ignored. More often than not, his jokes and pop culture references were lost on his fellow islanders. Which, if you asked him, was such a shame. He was totally funny when other people knew what he was talking about.

Snorting softly, he watched the other man move the bolder before leaning lightly against one of the nearby trees. "Seriously though, what's with the trap?" he asked, not bothering to introduce himself as he pried into the stranger's business.

"You trigger it, you get hit by boulders," Cable explained helpfully as he turned around to pick up another one, well aware that that wasn't the question he was actually being asked.

"Unless," he added, "you're very fast."

"Well, that's not a creepy reply to an honest question," Logan said flatly, though he didn't push or ask his question again. That would imply that he was more curious than he actually was.

"It was an honest answer," Cable replied, "just not the one you wanted."

"They're good for testing your reflexes," he added after a pause.

"So are those little hammers in the doctors office," Logan pointed out. "And when you use them, people are way less likely to get crushed by rocks."

Pushing away from the tree, he wandered a little closer to examine the trap. It was about then that Linus finally caught up, the large Golden retriever bounding over and skidding to a stop as Logan snapped his fingers and pointed at the ground. The animal stopped on command, sitting down almost instantly, though he was practically vibrating with excitement, tail swishing as watched the other man, clearly eager to great him and beg for food and attention.

Apparently the dog was finally tired of chasing birds.

"That depends on the doctor," Cable replied with a slight smile. He'd known quite a few who wouldn't mind crushing people with rocks.

When Linus approached him, Cable looked at him questionably for a moment before reaching out with his flesh and blood right hand to pet his head.

"Nice dog," he remarked to Logan as he did so.

Linus yipped once in appreciation, letting the stranger pet him before starting to sniff his hand and then putting his paws up to try and lick his face.

"Linus, knock it off," Logan said, watching as the dog sank back down. "He's a good dog, but- I dunno, sometimes I think he honestly believes everyone around here is carrying food just for him. He's going to end up a fat dog the way he eats and begs."

Linus was oblivious to his master's concerns though, and his tongue hung out a little as he sat back down and offered his paw. When all else failed, offering his paw usually got him something.

Cable didn't really know how to deal with dogs. It had never really come up in the life he led.

So when Linus offered him his paw, he just gave him a long look and then turned back to Logan.

"There are worse flaws than optimism," he replied. "Even when it's misplaced."

Linus let his paw hang in the air a moment longer, before getting bored and wandering off to sniff the trees. Clearly there was no food to be had here.

"I wouldn't know," Logan replied. "I've never been optimistic."

Wandering closer to the trap, he reached out as if he might touch it, before drawing his hand back and slipping it into his pocket. "So why do you need to test reflexes? If this for the ITF or something? I thought they just ran around and did push-ups and target practice."

"I have some students I'm teaching," Cable replied. "This will be for an obstacle course I'm making then run so I need to test it, make sure nothing's too dangerous."

"It's bad form to kill someone during training," he elaborated dryly. "I could get disbarred."

"Yeah, but- Training to be what? Or is this, like, a sports thing?" Logan asked, his interest clearly piqued,

"It's a soldier thing," Cable replied, in the same calm even voice but his fake left eye flashed as he spoke. "You spend too long in the crosshairs and you can't sleep unless you know for sure that you're still fast enough."

"I make sure they are."
