Jess didn't knock on the door, just in case momma and baby were both sleeping, but it was already open a crack so she peeked her head inside to see Sharon still awake, if barely. It was only then that she motioned for Sam to join her.
"Hey," she said, keeping her voice soft. "I promise we won't keep you long, we just wanted to come meet the newest member of the family and see how you were doing."
Sam was leaning in tightly with Jess, not knowing how hard this was going to be. It was a happy moment, but at the same time, he didn't know what to make of it. He had new family, he had his father's new life right in front of him and he had his arm around Jess' waist to hold on tight as she could.
"Hey," Sharon said, sleepy and soft, but glad to see the both of them. She beckoned them both closer with a small motion of her hand. "We're both doing fine. Tired, but I guess that's to be expected, huh?"
"You were sure in here for an awfully long time," said Jess, slipping inside the room once they were invited. She really wasn't going to impose for long, but she knew how important a moment this was for Sam. And for herself, too. "Wow, she's gorgeous. What's her name?"
Sam just kept in close, smiling softly as he approached without much more invitation, leaning his face down over her face and reaching one hand out just lightly to touch the tiny fingers, still a bit in shock that this little person existed.
"It's not so unusual, I guess. Remember that for when you're planning on having your own," Sharon said, gently teasing.
"Her name is Terpsichore, Cori for short. Do you want to hold her?" The invitation was extended to both, but especially Sam. Cori was his new sister, after all.
"Hi Cori," said Jess softly, just barely touching her hand as well, then looking back over her shoulder at Sam. "Go on," she said. "Hold your little sister, Sam. Give her mom a bit of a break."
Sam didn't need much encouragement past that as he eased forward and took her into his arms, trying to be as gentle as he could. "Cori," he echoed, trying not to make any bad jokes about 'Terpsichore' or any Greek muses or gods or demons or in-between. "That's a cute name," he noted.
Terpsichore looked especially tiny in Sam's arms, and Sharon grinned at the picture they made.
She shifted, pulling the blanket a little higher and trying to make herself more comfortable on the bed. "Thanks," she yawned. "My friend Kara came up with it Your father chose her middle name, Grace."
Sam was pretty well entranced with the whole 'new life' thing going on right before his eyes. For once, instead of taking life away, he got to see it brought into the world. "She's going to grow up normal," he said, absolutely sure of that, if nothing else.
"To her, that will be normal," said Jess, giving Cori a soft, fleeting kiss to the forehead. "We should let you sleep, now that we've seen for ourselves she has all her fingers and toes."
Sam let out a quiet laugh, grinning at Jess and then turning that sunshine-like smile to Sharon. "That's after you convince me to give her back," he pointed out. "I'm kind of putting together a plan to make a run for it."
"Hey," she said, keeping her voice soft. "I promise we won't keep you long, we just wanted to come meet the newest member of the family and see how you were doing."

"How is she?" he asked, voice subdued.

"Sure, until the island turns her into a boy for the day."
