One of the first things that Chase had unpacked when she'd moved into her new office in Gotham was her punching bag. She found healthy physical expressions of aggression to be the best antidote for stress, and especially when she was working with the police department in D.C., spending her days interviewing murderers and child molesters and ( Read more... )

Well punched someone was a generous term. After years of training there were few people who could actually land a punch on her and Chase sadly wasn't one of them. Monet caught the punch with an open palm which she ever so casually wrapped around Chase's fist.

"A little therapy? Or do you usually attack punching bags?" Monet asked dryly, squeezing her hand gently- well, gently for Monet- before she let go of Chase's hand casually. Monet smiled at her critically. "Your reactions are too slow."

Chase blinked at her in surprised, though was relieved that she hadn't accidentally come into contact with someone's face. "Usually... punching bags, yes. I prefer them to both air and people as far as violence goes." She pushed a hand back through her hair and added, "You on the other hand have got fantastic reflexes."

Monet tended to prefer her physical activities to include other people. It was usually much more satisfying throwing an irritating idiot through a window than a punching bag. Though to be honest Jamie tended to be both an idiot and a punching bag for her.

"Yes, well that is what happens when you've been trained to fight daily since you were very, very young. Besides if you don't have fantastic reflexes then in my line of business you're going to end up dead pretty quickly." Monet said smirking at the woman as she ran her eyes over her. She probably wouldn't be much of a challenge to take down.

"What line of business is that?" Chase asked, regarding her curiously. She certainly knew enough people for whom that was true - but they tended to be on different ends of a spectrum.

"The kind that kicks the villain's butt in spandex and lycra, though I prefer leather and kevlar." Monet said dryly, glancing at Chase. Unlike Dick, Monet wasn't ashamed of who she was and had never hidden her identity. Well, not often. "More recently under the P.I guise."

"You were a costumed hero?" Chase clarified, suddenly much more interested. She'd found that using the term "vigilante" tended to set the wrong tone, even if she still found "hero" to be a bit grandiose.

"Superhero, heroes don't tend to fly or have the ability to put a man several times her size through a wall." Monet said correcting Chase. Her attitude could be mistakenly conceived as Monet believing that she was better than everyone else, where as Monet knew she was better than everyone else.

"You can fly?" Chase asked. Though fascinating, it suddenly made the woman less interesting from a clinical standpoint, as having extraordinary abilities somewhat confounded the issues she found interesting about most masked heroes and villains. The why became more obvious, and the why was the interesting question.

"Amongst other things; telepathy, accelerated healing factor, superhuman strength, speed, agility, the list is quite endless. Although the island seems to neuter any mutant abilities." Monet said, curling her fingers beneath into a tight fist. If there had have been a punching bag there then Monet probably would've put her hand through it. Instead Monet pressed her fingernails into her palm before stretching her fingers out in a handshake. "I'm Monet St. Croix or M if you prefer. You're rather curious, I have to admit, what are you a reporter or an officer of the law? No... you'd be more annoyed about vigilantes... hmmm... Doctor?"

Now that was interesting. An aspect of the island that Chase had not really considered before - the effect on someone of the loss of ability. She wondered if the woman might experience the same kind of trauma as someone losing a limb, or going blind. Hmmm.

She shook her hand and offered a small smile. "Chase Meridian. And you're close... psychologist."

"A shrink. Parfait. I'm always surprising shrinks," Monet said dryly. She had never openly discussed what had happened with her brother but with psychologists, well, that was a different story. Jamie had thought he'd acted in all of their best interests but really she had never believed that to be the case. His best interest maybe. And the good doctor had gotten quite the surprise when he'd learned that Monet was hiding away the fact that everyday she contemplated killing herself seriously. "Work on any interesting cases? I'm studying psychology under Doctor Sweets."
