One of the first things that Chase had unpacked when she'd moved into her new office in Gotham was her punching bag. She found healthy physical expressions of aggression to be the best antidote for stress, and especially when she was working with the police department in D.C., spending her days interviewing murderers and child molesters and rapists, she spent an awful lot of time suppressing the desire to throttle whoever was across the table from her. It was extremely helpful to be able to go home and throttle something else.
She didn't have her punching bag here, but she definitely still had stress. And whereas it was generally preferable to hit something, the air would do in a pinch. So she found some workout clothes, pulled her hair back in a ponytail, and jogged down to the beach.
She certainly wasn't a trained fighter, but she'd taken karate lessons as a teenager and then went to kickboxing classes every week when she'd started working. She got herself warmed up first by doing some jumping jacks and sit-ups in the sand, until she was breathing heavily, and then started punching and kicking the air, putting all of her strength into it and letting out puffs of air with each imaginary hit.
At some point she closed her eyes, letting the world drop away, imagined that there was actually a punching bag in front of her - and couldn't help but remember the first time she saw Bruce Wayne, when he knocked down her office door. He'd heard her with the punching bag and thought someone was attacking her... his Batman instincts must have kicked in.
Eyes still closed, she took a deep breath, punched the air twice, and then spun around quickly, imagining an attacker behind her and lunged forward to take a round swing...
Which, to her completely shock, connected. Her eyes flew open and she realized that she'd actually punched someone.
