All he wants is a book.
Mathias has so little interest in movies that he passes by the projector without so much as a glance on his way to the bookshelf. There are others in the rec room, but no one seems to be interested in the reel either and it's only after he's collected a few novels from the shelf that he notices the reel stopped halfway through. Pausing by the projector, Mathias frowns, then presses the button to begin to reel once again. He doesn't know why he does it, only that it happens and in an instant, his face fills the wall.
From his dry, cracked lips to his sunburned forehead, Mathias knows this is his face and not someone who simply looks like him. This is how he had looked upon his arrival on the island, but something is off. Something is definitely not right, and it isn't until the others begin to talk that he realizes what, exactly, is wrong.
His back is broken. He is the one lying under the sleeping bag, his legs stripped, more bone than flesh. The others are talking about taking off his legs and rather than being involved in the conversation, rather than trying to be the voice of reason, he's the one they're talking about.
Between his arrival and the appearance of Henrich's body on the beach, Mathias doesn't think he's capable of getting worked up over this. He only knows that this isn't how it happened. He wasn't the one with the broken back, he was the one doing the cutting, sawing through bone and flesh, holding back vomit until the end. This isn't how it happened.
"What the hell..." he murmurs, going around to sit down on the couch. His body drops heavily to the cushions as he stares almost blankly at the film. He's telling them to cut off his legs and Mathias only shakes his head, not believing what he's seeing. Everything looks and sounds right, everything about him is accurate, except his back wasn't broken. It was Pablo who'd been lying on the ground, Pablo who'd gone down the mine shaft and fallen, Pablo whose legs had been hacked off with a hunting knife.
As he's predicted, his life is a horror movie. Rather than the role he'd actually played, here he is, just a background character. Disposable.
Watching Jeff lift the rock, Mathias laughs hollowly, unable to look away. The rocks crashes down and the Mathias on the screen starts to scream.
[Canon puncture in a way. Rather than the book, Mathias has found the movie based on the book, which has significant plot changes. The scene he is currently watching is
here, but please be warned that it graphically depicts Mathias's legs being broken and then cut off.]
