Saffron still couldn't hardly believe how long it had taken Jack and her to realize they'd shown up on the island on the exact same day. It was almost as hard to believe they'd been there three years. Saffron hadn't been in the world that long since she was a teenager. She'd changed, she knew, and reluctantly for the most part, and even though she had grown to be quite pleased with her life on the island she still missed the black something fierce.
Three years on the island combined with Jack's chosen birthday, and the two of them had decided a party was in order. They'd invited everyone they could think of, told them to invite everyone they could think of, and now as darkness fell over the island, the Hub was gearing up for the celebration. Saffron had baked Jack a huge, beautiful birthday cake, and had thought to make more food as well, but as it had turned out she hadn't needed to do anything else. Bill made all sorts of things, and several others chipped in, including Chase, Buck, Sam, Webster, and Cameron. Saffron was pretty sure, though, that Jack was most excited about Jane's offering of blueberry pie.
The pie wasn't the only reason Jack was smiling. He loved parties, but more than that, he'd come to realize that after three years here- he kind of liked it. When he'd left home to go to war, he had been seventeen and he hadn't had anyplace feel like home, not really, until he'd joined Rose and the Doctor. He hadn't lived anyplace for a linear three years since he was a boy. It was when he realized facts like that that the island wasn't the worst thing in the universe.
He'd have never looked for a reason before, but as the people filled the Hub, Jack kept glancing at the gorgeous redhead. It had to be more than a coincidence that they were pulled here the same day. It had to be more than a coincidence that they had such a shady past in common. It had to be more than a coincidence that with all the people who had come and gone, the two of them were still here to laugh and dance and drink and celebrate the anniversary. Last year he'd crawled into a bottle and hoped he'd wake up back in the world. This year he swaggered through the crowd, pausing so he could wind his arm around Helen's waist briefly before moving on.
Saffron glanced up at Jack with a warm smile when his arm went around her waist, and clasped her hand in his briefly as he pulled away. Her friendship with Jack was unlike any other relationship she had on the island, and she didn't think she would have traded it for anything. Past island anniversaries had come and gone without her taking much notice, but she was glad they were celebrating this one.
