The sun was going down, and the house was finally ready for guests. I stood in front of the mirror in Joscelin's and my bedchamber, surveying myself one last time before returning to the main room where already, Karolina, Bill and Mohinder were helping the preparations. My dress was one I'd loved for quite some time, a long low-backed gown of black silk. It did not quite bare my marque in its entirety, but showed enough to catch the eye. My hair was tied in a loose knot, my jewelry simple; I had no desire to show off tonight, simply to enjoy dressing up and celebrating with my friends.
Melisande's diamond winked at me from where it hung in the window. I thought for a moment of Imriel, how dearly I wished he were here for this. A proper home, a real party; he would have loved it. But he would not want me to be melancholy; nor would Hyacinthe or Ysandre, whose absences from tonight's gathering would both be sorely missed. Setting a smile on my face, I blew out the lamp and left the bedroom, going down the hall toward the sitting room, where I could hear laughter, and the sounds of talking.
The sitting room was everything I had hoped it would be. Thanks to the island's mysterious gifts, the windows sported drapes hanging down to the floor, every chair and bench had a pillow on it, and the hangings on the walls nicely complemented the colors in the carpet; candles sat on every available surface, food and drinks were laid out on a table in the corner. I stood in the doorway for a minute, surveying everything with a smile. Home, I thought. It truly feels like home.
